I plucked up the courage to ask this afternoon, after a lovely walk through the countryside and a picnic, and she said yes :D :D

Probably crazy, but asking her Dad for permission was so much harder than asking her! But then I already knew she'd say yes (well, pretty much ;)), which helped!

Have spent most of today phoning friends and relatives to spread the news. I didnt plan for that bit :o In fact I hadnt thought much beyond getting the little box out of my pocket, to be honest!

Rambling here, nevermind.

Hooray!

leet editing skills there CBS!

Thanks :)

Her name's Lucy and she's a theology student at university with me - and my housemate :) We've been together for 4 years today ( ) which takes us back to AS levels! She's fantastic :) And even said I chose the same ring she would have - I call that a success! :)

Congratulations. :)

When's the wedding?!?!? Do we bring our hats?

Sometime at the end of next summer, or next Autumn we think. We're finishing our degrees this year, then need to leave time for jobhunting (fun!) before the day. And of course OcUK's invited

Lol I don't see your logic there El, it's a woman off the streets.

OP: Congratulations mate, your quite young but if you know it's right :)

She was never 'on the street', thankyou very much :p But yes, it feels right so who cares if we're younger than most?

congratulations! and asking the father for permission - very traditional and polite. I like that.

kudos, sir.

Thanks!
It was an odd one. Her dad's a very traditional chap, (Yes, you really could use 'chap' to describe him.. ) so I knew he'd be offended if I didnt ask. At the same time though, I knew I would have asked her even if he said no, it just would have made things a little messier and less pleasant. (At the end of the day I didnt see it as asking him, more as telling him I was going to do it beforehand. I didnt phrase it that way to him of course! ;)) Still, this way he's been given the impression I'm all gentlemanly and such, and as he approved the union (so to speak) its more likely we'll get some financial help with the big day. Plus since both families are happy we can have a get-together to celebrate the engagement and talk about the big day - much more satisfying than running away to Gretna!

Nicely done my friend, nicely done. Be proud.

Apparently I'm set for life now. The ring I chose for her had three diamonds set in a row (called a trilogy design) which are meant to be for past, present and future. (Yeah yeah, very cheesy!) But its free to interpretation. It seems 'more' 'tea' 'please' also works. I've tried some other word combinations too, but they're not forum-suitable ;)

Great news - and keep us updated with everything  :)

I can't help thinking that at 20 years old you're a bit young.... However if you know it's right and it works out then it can only be a good thing. :) I wish you two all the best.

Thanks to you both :)
Our age is my only worry really - In fact 'worry' is the wrong word, but it was something I thought about seriously. Certainly when I asked her Dad I thought there was a chance that he'd make a similar comment, but in the event he didn't mention it.
My thoughts are basically that while we're younger than most couples, only we can know when it feels right. I cant imagine spending my life with anyone other than this woman - or rather I can imagine it well enough to know I wouldnt be happy! We've also been together a rediculously long time for a couple our age. We started dating at 16, and moved in together (at university) at 18 so its not as though I'm rushing into this.

(Sorry for dragging the thread up again :) You didnt have to read it :P)

Dragging the thread up again...

We've set a date :)

After discussions with the vicar, and plodding around reception venues that cost more to hire for a day than our combined rent is for a year (not kidding!) we've settled on a place and date. Having said that, I probably shouldn't broadcast the exact details to the internet! But we're getting married in her old church in the town her parents live, and then holding the reception in a hotel in a nearby village. It'll be on the 21st July next year, a saturday.
