i have been having some problems with the 4870X2 that i bought last week so i called ocuk today and got a rma to refund the card :)

im a bit reluctant to get another ati now so im going to be getting a GTX280 instead, will i notice much of a loss in performance compared to what i got from the 4870X2 when it was behaving itself?

also how is the power consumption? i have a Corsair HX 620W Psu, am i right in thinking that if it could run a 4870X2 that it will be able to handle the GTX280?

Depends on the game! But yes if the game supports the X2 you will see a loss of performance

Seems to be a bit of a current trait this, have 3 mates who have recently had various probs with 4870 and X2's and now reluctantly (in their words) going back to NV as they are balled off with stability, drivers and heat

here is the system im on

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600
ATI 4870 X2
SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX
Abit IP35
Corsair HX 620W Psu
120gig Maxtor SATA
300gig Maxtor SATA

lately i have been playing Farcry 2, Crysis & Crysis Warhead, Deadspace, Oblivion and soon ill be playing Fallout 3

i usually play at 1680 by 1050 with 8xAF

I highly doubt you will see a loss in playable performance at those settings.. You will see a drop in some benchmark scores and thats about it.

well its to replace my 8800gt :) it just isnt up to the job anymore and i plan to get a better monitor somewhere down the line

Another dodgy X2, it's no wonder ATI are cheaper is it?

If i were you at your res i'd get a 260 and pocket some dough.

Your PSU will be fine. Assuming you have a 620W with an 8-pin connector, or a 6+2? (for the 280)

The 260 just uses 2 6 pin.

Echo the 260 suggestion. They're 2/3rd the price and certainly not 2/3rd the performance. Brought mine with a view to get another SLI (Good saving over 2 cards and still more performance than i'l realistically need) but i doubt i'l even bother now!

The BFG 260 MAXCORE OC is a very capable card and cheaper than the 280 - tho if you plan on getting a higher res screen then it might be a different story.

thats my main worry :) i think ill get the BFG GeForce GTX 280 OCX that is due in on friday

at least i can play dead space at max setting on my old 8800gt while im waiting for the new card :D
