so please bear with me.:D

this new phenom 2 965 quad core 3.4GHz due out soon, is this enough power for gaming.......UNCLOCKED, or will it need to be overclocked to play Crysis

Current cpu's can play games without the need of overclocking, without any problems, so yes it can.

My Q6600 at 3.0ghz can play Crysis, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Call Of Duty etc etc.

As, Wes has already mentioned, the Phen 2 will be fine for all gaming unclocked. As long as you have a decent GPU/gfx to go with the CPU you'll have a smooth gaming experience.

What gfx card will you be using with it - as Crysis is very GPU dependent?

i'll be using the GTX 295, or the equivelent/better next summer....i'm intending to build my own gaming pc...so it'll be high spec, i probably will overclock but right now i'm not much good at it.... i'm having a real bad time, cant overclock anything!

my current set up and problem is :-

WIN XP, GT 8800, MSI mobo, 4 GB RAM, FX 64, OCZ 600

there's a problem with oveclocking that wasn't there before...... i've downloaded the latest Drivers for my card....and upgraded Riva tune to 2.24.

but card will not not overclock any more..... riva tuner sais ``upload latest version, drivers do not comply with this version``...this is the latest version of Riva tune! .....but i've never really understood riva tune anyway.

the NVIDIA version will alllow me to overclock the card...but it sais when i ask it to test the card ``gpu test failed``....it wont even give me the optimum overclock ``overclock failed``.... it also doesn't tell me how far i should overclock CPU/ MOBO........it's just a sliding scale....so i'm a bit scared to adjust it!

as a result when i overclock now.... the picture goes all pixillated and freezes up...within about 20 seconds, but it's ok on stock settings.

i'm looking for an easy to use software that allows me to overclock/ adjust all fan speeds easily/everything else ...the riva tune version is too complicated....too much detail..... plus when you do overclock on both softwares...i cant see on either, where you adjust the fan speeds...basically, i've no idea what i'm doing....

the 8800 gt used too overclock fine, but since new drivers/ new riva tune it wont, cpu temp 43 and 46 .

PC as it is now, is fairly slow with overclocking removed... but at least it works, this is why i'd prefer not to overclock in the future, i need a simple software/tutorial

Overclocking in my books is for enthusiasts, people who want to push their computer beyond it's limit to try and get the most out of it. My next computer will be sticking with stock clocks though.

yes, on my next pc, i might only do a mild overclock, this forum is great for building pc's, modding cases and buying the best gear....... because i couldn't build a thing before i joined here... but now i know exactly what i want.

when i mean mild, i mean i'll have to suss out this bloody Riva tune software first :D and then OC from 3.4 to 3.7.........rather than right up to 4. 1 etc ...because i'm bound to screw something up:D

i even had trouble applying the thermal paste, i had to redo it 3 times :D
mind you, fitting the OCZ600 PSU was dead easy, only took 15 mins:D

Wouldn't know, i hate GTA, but i heard the game has problems with utilizing quad cores effectively, which is why i think it is still worthwile getting a dual-core cpu.

You did not hear that on this forum because its a proven fact time & time again that GTA4 runs better on Quads & many independent reviews show the same.

How well it uses the 4 cores is irrelevant when it runs better overall.

sorry too hijack the tread but how much are the 965's?

About £750 - but a 920 D0 stepping will clock to ~4Ghz and only costs £210. It would probably hit 3.2GHz (same clock as 965) without any change to the voltages.

EDIT: Ignore the above - i thought you were talking about the i7 and not the AMD Phenom II X4 965 - my bad.

D'oh - you meant the AMD Phenom II X4 965 - my bad. (question got lost in translation)

I just registered the question asking for the price of a 965 - I've been answering/troubleshooting INTEL threads - and was obviously still in that mode of thought.

I bet i've put a few ppl off AMD with that quote ;)
