OK just got round to buying Crysis the other day. Expected to just jump straight in with all the setting on full, but man was I suprised.

With all the setting on full with 1920x1200 res the game runs at a crawl!

My system (see sig) isn't exactly slow. Is this normal?

If I leave all the effects etc on full but turn AA completely off it gets a bit more bearable but I have to turn res down to 1280x1024 to get any decent frame rate and on my 24" screens it make it look really wierd and blury.

Yup perfectly normal. Not many (if any) systems can handle it properly on full. You'll just need to tweak some of the settings to keep your native res with a bit of AA. Try turning down texture details, etc. Turning off shadows would help too.

My rig is a little inferior to yours, in that I get a lower OC on my Q6600 (2.7GHz) and my 3DM06 score is about 600 points lower than yours, but really our systems are pretty comparable. What I've done to get acceptable frame rates on Crysis is to change everything to medium except Shaders and Post-processing. These two parameters (for me) have the greatest impact on image quality, so I set them to high (in DX9 by the way). At these settings I get >30 frames/second in the Crysis GPU test at 1920x1200. Because of the motion blurring in Crysis, I find that 30 frames/second or better to be perfectly playable.

I wouldn't both with antialiasing. It doesn't do much for image quality but hampers performance. The Crysis engine already features an edge-blurring technique (enabled with Post-processing at high) that improves the appearance of foliage.

Hope that helps. I normally look for frames rates at or above 60 frames/sec, but - unlike other games - the graphics in Crysis feel really smooth at 30 frames/sec. It must be the motion blurring or some other fancy processing technique.

Yeah just browsing the forum quite a few people have mentioned shadows. I'll try it tonight with the shadows turned down and see if I can get away with at least a bit of AA on native res. Thanks.

You prob want to read the sig rules. Sorry to be a stickler but once a mod notices it they'll just change your sig to "READ THE RULES" or something anyhow.

Yeah it's normal, sucks eh. There are so many different combinations of settings you can go trough to get playable settings, so good luck finding something stuitable.

Also, your signature is too big, you're only allowed 4 consecutive lines of text, or an image 400x75 pixels and < 20kb

Playable on my rig (8800GT, 4400x2, 2GB) in the jungle 1920x1200, no AA, everything maxed except shadows. Until I get to the building area, really crawls.

AA is a fps killer in Crysis. Even 2x, it's a slideshow.

Oops sig changed. Yeah I guess I'll play with the settings when I get home. Knew Crysis was meant to be a graphics monster but didn't realise it was quite 'this' much of one lol

Tips for making it run at a half decent framerate without making it look rubbish:

1) Turn shadows to Medium

2) Turn off Motion Blur

3) Leave all other settings on HIGH

4) Run in DX9 mode

Should be more than playable at ~1680x1050 was for me on a GTX.

I must have a go and see how it works without motion blur. I just assumed that with MB you trade actual frames/second for a perceived improvement in smoothness, but I must give it a go.

I very much disagree with turning motion blur off. When I was playing the beta and the demo removing motion blur did virtually nothing for the frame rate. You are correct about it altering the perceived frame rate too, in my opinion you would be making the whole experience even more painful.

Take Matts advice and try a custom config pack too, it may seem like a hassle but it's worth it.

You don't run XP in dual boot do you? Crysis prefers XP you see (No arguments about this please, I'l pull up hundreds of benchmarks if I really must). I realise you may not be interested in running XP, just letting you know.

Motion blur is a very shader heavy effect and slows the game down considerably. The game is very much smoother with it disabled I found.

Motion blur fills in the gaps when low fps yes, but it also makes the entire thing feel sluggish.

Also, the thing about Crysis being faster in XP all depends on the card you are running. The ATi cards very much prefer Vista in 64bit mode.

As for going to DX9 from DX10 you won't be able to tell the difference.

I'm running Vista 64. Never bothered with the dual boot thing although I was tempted. I do have another PC on XP but doubt it will even run Crysis.

I'll mess around with shadows and motion blur and DX9 later and report back what works best for me. Hopefully I can find some sort of decent compromise.

Well had it on the last few hours with all settings on full except shadows (medium) with 2X Anti Analysing, 1920x1200 res. Left it on direct X10 mode and kept the motion blur and it runs great, even in a big gun fight (and I got in a few). Although if I turned it up to 4X AA it killed it. Found shadows and AA certainly made the most difference to FPS.

Nice looking game, loved it when a grenade went off near me and water and blood splashed all over my screen. Impressed the girlfriend who was walking past at the time!
