'I'm Julie Larson-Green, and Windows 7 was my idea'

Rolls Eyes...not this again.

May I just say I personally adore the Ribbons interface, it is by far superior to the old file menu in every way.

Secondly, I work in I.T Support and I can say with a great deal of professional experience that 'most people' don't have a clue about what they want and certainly aren't able to understand the simplicity that the Ribbon offers over the file menu.
What the majority of people I hear saying is plain and simple resistance to change, based on users have conceptions and those conceptions being change causes all kinds of irrationality (they teach you about it at uni).

The same goes for people hating Vista; Vista was and IS a great OS, but every thing that goes wrong with a computer, be it power or the user not having a clue is blamed on Vista.

Grinds my gears no end when people complain about Ribbon or Vista

Yep, 100% agree.
I dumped windows 7 and office '07 on my 72 year old mother-in-law, she was worried, but she has adopted all of it.
Thats from using IMAP mail via AOL and all previous versions of windows.
I had some spare bits hanging around (*and she is a geek at heart) Shes now running with 64bit Windows 7, 4GB RAM & Dual Core Intel overclocked @ 3ghz PC running 7 Ultimate with office 2007.

If a 72 year old widow can cope, I would question those that cant.
Incidently, she is looking forward to getting her cast off popcorn hour a-110 from us for her HD TV, just needs to get her brother to sort her CAT5e cabling.

Shes Cool. (*well as long as she keeps bringing wine to the house).

Regards

Slackness.

I'm not keen on the ribbom at present just because I dont know it. I know the old system inside and out so can perform function much faster. However I'm sure given the time to learn the ribbon it would be just as easy.

Ribbons are awesome, you don't even have to think or dig deep to find anything.

My mum, who is usually kinda scared of pc change, she's been using PC's since Windows 3.11, with MS Works, and has gone from Office 97 > 2000 > 2003 > 2007.

She switched to 2007, the same time as Windows 7.

"Why didn't they make it like this before?!" was her question :).

The ribbons are great and if you apply your brain for just a moment nothing requires digging. Like Mr bledd. here, my parents use a computer like it is going to blow up any minute and they navigate around Word 2007 with ease.

Which begs the question of the OP... what are you all doing to make the ribbon so hard to use?

As an aside, if you have to go digging for the bullets tool you should stop using computers - it's right there on the "Home" ribbon...with 3 different flavours of bullets no less.

Need a table?

I can see how hunting down that elusive Insert tab and then finding the larger than everything else Table button can be difficult for you seasoned Office 2003 pros.

OP I thought exactly the same thing when i first read that. The whole article stinks of a cosy PR exercise.
