I'm looking to upgrade

No unfortunately not. You're better off looking for a used 3770k, otherwise you would need an lga1150 motherboard for the cpu you are looking at.

Why are you looking at upgrading? If it is for gaming then you would barely notice any difference, and should overclock your cpu if for some reason you havent already.

I'm afraid that - although they are both Intel processors - the processor you linked to is not compatible with your current motherboard. Your motherboard's CPU socket is an LGA 1155, and the i7 4790k requires an LGA 1150 socket.

The fastest CPU you can upgrade to while keeping your current motherboard would be an i7 3770k.

What are you looking to gain from a CPU upgrade? I ask because for gaming, unless you're playing certain specific games, your CPU has quite some life left in it, especially if you look in to overclocking it!

Thanks for the replies, it was overclocked when I got it. Looking at dxdiag it has @3.40GHz then ~3.8GHz. I was looking to upgrade as looking at the system requirements lab's can I run it for warhammer total war to run at optimal settings I'd need Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0 GHz.

Although I appreciate that Total War games are heavy on CPU in comparison to others, I would be sceptical of the requirement for a 4790k and try it for yourself first!

Also, 3.4ghz is the stock speed for your processor, and the 3.4ghz is the speed at which Intel's built in Turboboost technology does some auto-overclocking, but it isn't *really* over clocking so to speak! You can squeeze a hell of a lot more out of your CPU by manually overclocking.
