I've saved up and decided to buy the following:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Asus P5B Deluxe
Geil 2GB PC6400C4 DDR2
Western Digital Raptor 36gb
Western Digital MyBook 500GB
Pioneer DVR-112DBK
Corsair HX 520W
Lian0Li PC-7 Plus
Keeping my x800GTo2 for the time-being!

Does anyone have any suggestions of anything I can change to improve the system?

Thanks!

Why the small raptor and the mybook?....

The raptor is all honesty is not worth it, especially one that size.... i have a 74gb 16mb cache one for my OS.

Personally i'd choose a decent larger sata2 hdd, 250gb, 320gb, or larger, doesnt matter.

As to the mybook, same as said above unless you specifically need it....

You'll proberly get some varying opinions on the motherboard to, i can hear the call for the DS3P now..... ....... though i think the one you choose personally looks like a good choice....

I'd only question the HDD choice myself, and perhaps might change the DVDRW to a sata one, but other then that the rest look like sound choices, the rest is down to the DS3P fanboys to jump on etc... lol :p

in my opinion same as the other guys have said the raptor especially 1 so small is pointless unless you have money to spend, I can see where your comming from for speed and the fact of having the fastest SATA drive but the cost / Gb is terible value, i dont think my latest hardrive was bad for the money, Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 NCQ 320GB SATA-II 8MB Cache, as it has a 8.5 seek time slightly faster than most.

Just to add to the clamour suggesting changing the Raptor, the Western Digital AAKS drives aren't that much slower and offer much better value. With the money saved I'd purchase an aftermarket cooler for the CPU - Noctua NH-U12F, Scythe Ninja or Tuniq Tower are all worthwhile. :)

Thanks for the response, I'll take it all into consideration!

I personally only need the raptor for my OS and installed applications, and a couple of games. I might for the next size up, but I'm not 100% just yet. As for the MyBook, I just want it as an external drive to fill with music etc. Would you consider just getting a massive drive?

If it's gonna stay plugged into your PC all the time you might aswell just have an internal one.

Change the ram to crucial - i had geil at first and it was very fussy on voltages.
change the hdds to 2x 500g samsung spinpoints.
also change the 112 to the sata version - then you can disable the jmicron controller.

I've got the 74Gb Raptor and it's a nice product (it's good to know they have the confidence to guarantee it for 5 years), but it's definitely a luxury item. I bought it when I was flush - I very much doubt I'd buy another one if I was on a budget, so I'd echo the comments of those who recommend alternatives.

I have a Raptor and I can't decide whether to sell it and get some Samsung Spinpoints or not lol... It isnt fast enough to justify spending £90 odd squids on it, when you can get much better cost:GB for the dough. For that you could get the 500GB Samsung Spinpoint that is a great drive.

The Raptor is also quite noisy.

Samsung 500gb for the win! :)

I have 2 x 36gb raptors in raid0 for my os and whatever games i feel like playing and i think they were worth every penny and provide enough space for what i use them for, you already have a 500gb drive in your list so storage space isn't a problem. if you can afford it i'd get it...or 2 :D

/me rubs my shiny raptors ;)

Do you think I'll see a sound different from my current setup (see signitaure) and what I'll be getting. Take into consideration the unbranded 90mm X 2 I have in it atm!

Depends what you are using it for but in most games then definitly yes.

I have the 150GB raptor hard-drive with a smart drive enclosure which makes browsing windows vista a breeze and it makes next to no noise with the smart drive enclosure. It does cost quite a bit but then you probably are going to keep it for a very long time anyway so i'd say they are quite good value if you are keeping it for more than a few years.

Also the crucial ballistix pc5300 2gb memory is very cheap at the moment and I think it is probably the best memory available enless you start spending a lot more money. Also it looks the best with it's yellow heatsink. :D

Also the thermaltake 120mm heatsink is the best at the moment so get that as well.
