So, I was at work today, with my macbook, like I usually am, everything was working fine, like it usually is, I go to leave, and shut down my macbook, everything seemed absolutely fine. I got home just there, took my macbook out my bag, fired it up and noticed that it said "you need to restart your computer" before I even got a chance to login. So I done what it said, I held down the power button and it restarted....that's what I hoped for anymore. The mac didn't turn back on, the power light is on, the charger lights are on, but absolutely nothing is on the screen, and it's not starting up? WTF is up with my mac!! I've only had it a couple of weeks, how can it be broke? What's wrong with it? Why won't it turn on?

I'm so angry right now, I've got a lump in my throat and I'm so worried that it's ****** for good!

Anyone know why it won't start up? How can I fix it?
The power light is on, but nothing is on the screen, the caps lock button doesnt even light up, nothing happens when I press any buttons.

HELP!

Well that was really a big help. They told me to do exactly what it said in the user guide, and just said right we can't help you, you'll need to send it back.

WTF, have I even had this thing for a month and I need to send it back?

**** buying a mac again.

Revision 1 of Apple hardware is notorious for being a bit iffy. Look on the bright side, at least you will have it promplty repaired/ replaced for free under warranty.

btw, dont you think "bumping" a thread within 7 minutes of your initial post is a bit excessive?

Yeah, sorry, I've calmed down a bit now. Was just very angry, and wanted it fixed. I've got an extremely sore head now :( They said they'll send a package out in the next 10 days :( and then I've to send it back, and won't get it for like another 10 days or more :(

This sucks, now I'm regretting paying all that money for it.

Yep, try taking the battery out. Have you tried putting the OS X disc and holding down C or H?

Yeah, several times, and then done it again when they asked me too over the phone.

I've took the battery out, and will leave it and try again later. Doubt I'll get anywhere though.

I'll wait until monday, and one of the guys in at work will hopefully be able to connect it to their mac, and get my files off it, and perhaps help in some way, if not then I'll send it back, but at least I'll have all my files.

Thanks for the help. Sorry I was a bit angry earlier.

My powerbook G4 did exactly that after about a month, phoned em on the saturday, they picked it up on the wednesday and it was back, working by the friday. That was a few years back now and it's still working flawlessly. So they're quite good at repairs it would seem. :)

You'll get the box on Monday or Tuesday, from experience it usually takes around 7 days to get it back.

My first macbook pro was repaired twice in the first month. Was replaced in month 3 and the replacement then had to be repaired out of the box. I now have it back with a loose battery :(

This will most definately be the last time I buy a first gen Apple product within the first 6 months of release.

Don't worry mate, you get problems with all products!

my CD/DVD drive went on my iBook, they sent a box out within 2 days, packaged it and sent it back, got it back within 4 days, they are really quick with stuff.

attach it over a network and turn it on? maybe the screen is just not working...

You can bring up the drive on your other PC and copy / delete what you want.

boot it up holding down the "t" key to boot it into target disk mode. This essentially turns the host mac into a big firewire disk so file transfer can be done pretty easily. However by the sounds of things your Mac is too bricked to even be booting the firmware, indeed it sounds suspiciously like your PSU or logic board are fried :| Worth a shot anyway and perhaps a useful tip for any other Macolytes lurking here

How to return?

I would love to return my iMac for repair or replacement (bought it at online Applestore) but applecare said I should to take it to my nearest Apple reseller for repair. It is only 6 weeks old - is there any way to get it replaced?

ll Mac hardware is under 12 months warranty out the box- you can buy more under the Applecare scheme. So my answer is a resounding "Yes!"

You can go into the Apple store and kick up a fuss and they might give you a new one.. but they are within their rights to repair or replace as long as it's "without significant inconvenience" and within a "reasonable time".

If they look like they're going to push you down the repair route.. try telling them you have coursework to do, so losing the machine for any length of time would be a major issue.. a bit of white lying never hurt anyone ;)

When they repair your Mac they wipe the disk and reinstall.*
15% of laptops (not just Macs) fail within the first year, rising to 20% within 2.

Troubleshooting here

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303234

Even if you have something massively illegal on your HDD, unless you have named your computer 'Illegal Wares Kingdom' with innapropriate icons on the desktop pointing to such material it will be ok.

In future, to guard against such panic when your hardware fails and needs to be repaired, or the laptop is stolen, or your mates browse your super secret files for a laugh and email the authorities might I suggest the Mac OS X native encryption of FileVault

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/filevault/

Also backup, test the backup, put the backup somewhere else.

My iBook had failed, after 13 months, turnaround was just over a week, plugged in the latest backup when it returned. Seamless.

*However in your case, the Apple techs will post everything off your hard disk drive to the internet/parents/girlfriend. Why? For the same reason they sold you the broken laptop in the first place.... they hate you!

Return?

I am still not clear about returnin stuff. Sorry to hijack this thread BTW (nobody move). If I bought my iMac online where do I return it given that the nearest Apple store is about 250 miles away!
