I've heard it for years from numerous different friends but to me just seem like a poor excuse. Nights out I could understand but some even say it when I ask them if they want to get lunch which is £7 for a full meal and pint!

Based on someone earning 20k the takehome would be £1415

Base figures for a nice(ish) apartment / half rent in a good house;
Rent £400
Bills £250
Food £220 (£50 x 4.33)
Lunches (£8 x 20) £160

£385 disbosible income a month left over

How can people be skint if you have a job earning 20k + (presuming you are sensible, none alcoholic / drug user / gambler / hooker addict etc.)

You can earn £100k and be skint, I've known some!

Yup.

There can be a lot more outgoings than just very cheap rent, things like transport costs can be a couple of hundred a month, then any old loans, things like trying to save for something.

£1030 how?

£1415 - Rent/Bills/Food/Lunches = £385

You're also not taking into account any petrol/travel costs, clothing, general household maintenance, savings etc.

Maybe they just don't want to spend £7 on lunch and a pint and have hobbies or other things they would rather spend their money on.

P.S. Your maths sucks!

Do you math?
Plus you've missed out a lot of bills.

And £7 for lunch soon adds up to a lot of money over a month if it isn't a one off.

I know someone who earns £50k a year and still struggles to make ends meet. It all started with "I'll grab a capital one and vanquis card to sort out my credit score".

This guy now eats beans on toast and can't take a weekend off work without having to plan out the next 3 months of overtime to sort out his bills. It's embarrassing.

You're missing a lot of things. Pension? Medical? Student loan? Straight off reductions on takehome there

Absolutely.
My Nephew earns £50,000 a year, lives with his Mum & Dad who basically pay for everything and he's skint.
My boss is top of band 8 NHS and her husband earns more but they couldn't afford a £1000 job on their car the other month.

OP needs a little training in lifes expenses.............

Rent on a 1 bed flat in Liverpool £350 to £400 PCM
Council tax £80 min
Water Rates £40 a month min
Gas and Elec £60 a month min
Travel to and from work £80 min

Their is just under £700 a month on basics without a car, food, clothing or kids.
That's with no debt at all!

So half the £1400 quid wage gone before you even eat.

So lets say we have £800 left PCM........

Food at least £200 PCM or £50 quid a week.

So £600 left which equals £150 per week.

One night out per week £50 min.

Clothing £50 min PCM or £12.50 PW

This is if you don't smoke or drink every night.

Then the is family birthdays and other unintended events like parties etc.

Do you see how quickly the money diminishes to end up skint.

Me for example this month am skint, car failed MOT front suspension is shot, that will be £400 thank you.

Daughters birthday pool party at the end of the month, that will be another £200
Daughters birthday present at least £100.
Oh and forgot dance lessons and a competition in blackpool £150 thank you.

To live doing what you want (sort of) you need at least £1000 per week take home.

Money goes nowhere these days. :(
