I'm sold on a Telewest package, are they any good?

Ive been with telewest since Jan 2004 and in total i have had about 4 hours downtime. consistent service, and even got a free new modem because the old one was a little slower than sposed to be. Great service.

do you know of any way to find that out beforehand?

Also, with service do you mean speeds and downtime etc?

Ask people that have Blueyonder round about you?
Yes, that was what I meant.

Been with Telewest / Blueyonder for 10 years right from when they launched their 56k anytime package :D

Never had an issue with them.

Paul ...

Exactly the same for me, I've been with them since the beginning.

Never had any major problems. Well, tell a lie, I had to have the Modem replaced once. No hastle atall though, they came and replaced it very quickly.

I recently upgraded to 10-meg and it's great, over 1000k/sec from most servers.

Thats a point, i'd like to continue to use my wireless router, is that an easy thing to do with Telewest?

Or is it going to be a bit of a mission to set up?

Which router?

As long as it's a "broadband" router (i.e. not an ADSL router), it should be as simple as hooking them up and switching the modem on.

Telewest provide a dedicated line for broadband which goes into a cable modem.
The cable modem then has an ethernet and a USB port at the rear.

So long as your setup is currently:
Internet > ADSL Modem > Router > Lan
You wont have any problems, all that will change is 'ADSL Modem' to 'Nice Telewest Cable Modem Giving Nice Fast Connections With Limited Downtime' (or NTCMGNFCWLD :p)

:D :D :D

I have this router:

LINKSYS

Its a "Wireless ADSL Modem Firewall Gateway w/ 4-Port Switch"

Have been with telewest and blueyonder for 4 years now with this full package and, apart from some teething problems (mostly bandwidth related) when we first signed up - they were new then too - we've not had any problems at all. They even give us regular free bandwidth upgrades!!!

And don't forget you get the ITV and BBC HD channels with your new shiney "Sky Plus" esq box....

You will need a new router - one that doesn't have an ADSL modem built-in. Instead you'll need a broadband or "Cable/DSL" router which simply has an ethernet WAN port on the back as well as the usual LAN ports.

You just get a wireless Cable/DSL router. Something like the Linksys WRT54GL, for example - it has an ethernet WAN port for the cable modem, 4 ethernet LAN ports and wireless.

Off on a sidetrack, but does anyone know if theres any plans to extend cable coverage of Telewest/NTL? I'd rather be with them but they aren't available around here (Middlesex, Harrow to be specific)

Network build is very very limited atm and in the short term this won't change, some new dev's get done but normally only by agreement with the developer.
