I'm sorry AMD

Well i've had the machine running for a good few weeks now, and to be honest, apart from re-encoding vidoes i can't see much diffrence.

Games are just as smooth, and 3dmark06 are a bit higher, but it does feel slow to respond....
but once it responds it quick....

to be honest i might get my old setup back up and running, do some back to back runnings of games etc.... I know no one would really care, but i would like to see how much of a diffrence in the real world there is

( i still love AMD )

if you wanted better games experience you should have looked at upgrading your gfx before cpu, that 5200 isn't exactly a slouch.

have you clocked it yet?? comparing my q6600 @2.4 to where i run it 24/7 @ 3.8 is like night and day also......i find it a little hard that you aren't at least a little impressed coming from where you did.

Yes, this is why it is best to ignore virtually every piece of advice given in here about CPU recommendations and just make your own mind up.

Last year, you were a blithering idiot if you bought a dual core over a quad.
This year you are a blithering idiot if you buy a quad over a dual core.

Last year you were a blithering idiot if you bought a Ati card over an Nvidia card.
This year, everybody wet their pants about Ati and now hate Nvdia with a passion.

Oops went from a blithering idiot to a blithering idiot..... i don't follow the trends.....LOL

I have a 8800 GTX on my q6600 same as the 5200, but it does seem smoother now in most games ( that could have been the fresh install of windoz tho... )

I'm gonna get my 5200 back up and running at some point ( BIOS chip is deaded ) and see what she is like

I am impressed, just not amazed,
Intel fan boys talking about AMD being rubbish are wrong, ok AMD do things diffrent to Intel, but it's like a girl using her teeth and a girl that doesn't.... Some people like the teeth, overs don't

if you'd come from a single core 754 sempron i think you'd be amazed, but the 5200 aint a poor processor for todays standards .....not bleeding edge obviously.

the quad should have improved your minimum fps at least which sometimes helps more than the avg.

some ppl just talk ****, AMD are far from crap as you say ....still not there for me to consider them again just yet lol but i like to clock my gear and intel are still on top there, i happen to like intel boards/chipsets better also.

So because you noticed a big leap in performance from your AMD to your first Intel and then bought another Intel that wasn't as big a leap as the original one you're moving back and taking a fairly big leap backwards.

No, thats not at all how I am saying it.

Or rather thats not what I mean...

Sure, the AMD ( Opteron 175 @ 2.8 ) to Intel ( E6300 ) was a Massive jump, and no one can possibly argue that out.

When I moved from a Dual core 1.8 to a quad core 2.4, I expected a fair jump yes...

I expected the kind of jump that you get from 1.8 to 2.4, which is 600Mhz, I never got that... I expected a jump in the way that you should expect when going from 2 cores to 4... I never had that either. Its no better for running multiple apps at all and in fact its slower on a lot of things. Its much quicker when running multicore aware apps dont get me wrong, but the dual core can run 4 versions of an app better than the quad core can, and that should not happen, but it does.

So, on that score, not, I am not impressed by quad core intels, but going by how well the dual core AMDs run their tasks compared to how the intels run their apps, I feel that its time to go back and look at how AMD are doing.

Now, Im not saying that all AMD are this and all Intel are that, but for me, this is what I have found, and it has been a fairly reliable outcome for all my AMDs and all my Intels, and given that I own a silly number of PCs, I think that there must be something in it.

Right now the E8400 is the better choice, but as apps get to use more cores properly, you will soon find the E8400 is not such a great choice, and perhaps a quad will be a more future proof option?

Lol can't agree with that! :D

I always listen to what people have to say about anything, especially if they make good posts and get their point across.

If one was to ignore all advice given it would indeed be a long uphill struggle from nOObdon.

I always give good advice! and its freely given too!

I think that the advise needs to be taken, but taken with a pinch of salt from some people ( Im no angel as you should know by now ). There is a lot of people however have their views, and rather than give an honest account of how they feel towards their choice of CPU / GPU / Butplug but you do see it all too often on forums such as this one, where you say something like "Oh, what do you thik of AMD" and then you get slagged off and trampled on by the Intel Fan Club.

Its too much sometimes.

Another thing... I asked a while back about running 2 6600GT Cards in SLI and was slagged off for trying it out! - WHAT? People kept saying that I could get better cards, but no one actually really listened to the fact that I wanted to SLI just to do it.. I already had better and this was merely small fun project.

I ended up doing it, found a useable implrovement, but nothing ground breaking, but it was great fun... Soon after that I went and got 2xBFG 8800 Ultra OC cards, which at the time were the fastest cards available and if it had not been for the 6600GT SLI messing baout, Id have never even tried the Ultras in SLI Mode.

Right now I feel like doing the ver ysame with crossfire but I cant find a master to go with any of my ATI cards.

It's mainly games I want to run quickly. When the day comes for multicore I will buy an 8 core Nehalem. All PCs are future proof - you can replace everything :)

Thats great.

I seriously doubt that you will find games run any better though no matter what...

I feel that CPUs today are such seriously quick beasts, that when you are playign your games, you simply will not notice any difference at all... Sure, benchmarks will show this or that but when it boils down to it, you wont see much at all, if any!

For example, my Q6600 plays games exactly the same as my Q9450 does.
I saw no difference in games between my Opteron 175 and the E6300 when they both had the 8800GTS Cards in them... In fact I think they were 100% identical in every way except the Opteron setup accessed the HD quicker.

This topic has been said over and over and my opinion is still the same.

Q6600 is nowhere future-proof because by the time all the adds will support and be able to use it, it will be too slow and too old.

Unless you do encoding/editing or whatever that can use 4 cores at 100% load RIGHT NOW, there is no point going dual just because 2 games can use it and 2 other games in the incoming year will be able to - that doesnt mean the dual will do it any worse.

I would say the E8400 and higher duals still would be just fine for the next 1 or 1,5year and by that time we should have 35nm nehalems out and the 45nm ones will be as cheap as E2xx - E7xxx series right now.
