Imac 2012

Outside of the obvious CPU and GPU upgrades, I'm hoping we see the arrival of USB 3.0 on these machines. Been itching to pull the trigger on one of the existing i7 3.4Ghz iMacs but think the future-proofing element of USB 3.0 is making me wait.
 
All seriousness why would you even need a retina display on something like a 27 inch screen? I currently use a 24 inch dell and from my viewing position the letters are clear and crisp. From 3 feet back what exactly would you gain with a retina screen?

It's not like a tablet where you are zooming in often.

They are pushing the boundary with the 9.7", a 27" will cost how much?!?

Think of the number of pixels needed.
Think of the number of potential dead pixel.
Think of what is an acceptable number or tolerance
Think of the yield percentage

At the moment, even if they could make one, the yield will be so low that you'll be bending over for it. And when you look at it at more than arms length (you can't say that for a tablet), that resolution is not needed. It will be nice but for essential.

OLED seems more likely.

Technology moves on, so do manufacturing processes.

All your points will be non issues.

I don't think there is a video card that could push the number of pixels in a 200PPI+ 27" screen if such a screen could be made.

No OLED though. Apple won't use it as the colour reproduction isn't high enough yet.

Yes but in how many years? The 2012 iMac won't have a hig PPI screen.

I'm probably going to buy one to replace my 2009 27" iMac though.
 
Apart from the obivious CPU/GPU upgrade I would like to see inclusion of USB 3.0, HDMI port, SSD as standard and slave 1TB HDD instead of the Super Drive.

And finally bring back the 24" form factor with hi resolution 2560x1440 matt screen.

I'm hoping for a few design changes - and a strong graphics card :p
And I hope it comes out soon - Waiting on it so I can change it with my Macbook Pro :)
 
If there was an affordable high DPI screen, you'd see consumer monitors popping up all over the place with that panel in.

Just the same as you saw a few 27" screens using the panel that's in the new iMac before it made it to the new iMac.

It's an iMac therefore no need for HDMI for the vast majority of customers. There is on a Mac mini, hence why it has an HDMI port.

USB 3? Unlikely. Apple already have high bandwidth buses in FW800 and Thunderbolt.
 
All the hDPI stuff in Mountain Lion suggests there will be 'double the res' Macs at some point in the near future. Undoubtedly the Macbook lines will be first (once they merge the Air and Pros together?) though. It might not be Apple that makes the screens, but they're the ones throwing money at LG/Samsung/Sharp to make higher res displays happen.
