iMac dissatisfaction.

So I bought my iMac about two weeks ago and I was having somewhat fun with it, doing my University work on it and what not, all was going great, but I think the buyers excitement has completely wore off now and I don't think I even want the iMac anymore to be quite honest.

I know Mac's are not meant for gaming and so on, but one of the main reasons I got my Mac was to casual game on games such as Indie titles, Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft and also, maybe a few smaller steam titles? (Gary's mod and such?).

I was playing WoW on this machine and it was going quite well, with a bit of configuring it was getting 60-90fps which I was very pleased about, so that was nice, but I felt the back of my machine to test the temperatures and well, it was red-hot.

I've been testing temps since and well, it idle's at about 40c-45c, now I know because it's an all in one computer that the components will run a lot hotter than normal, but I'm just finding no reasons why I want to keep it around.

My computer (Gaming Rig) never goes about 45c, even with intense gaming.
The iMac now is not getting used, I'm finished until Sept when I enter my 3rd year, I've got no use this machine, it's only being used for an alternate monitor (so I can game on my Rig and then watch things on the iMac), it seems useless.

/rantover.

What would you guys do? Would you keep it, wait until september and then have it for your uni work then or try and sell it?

Here are the specs:

21.5" iMac, 2.5GHz, 12GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, AMD 6750m 512mb.

Current temps while idle:
CPU: 47c, GPU: 54c, HDD: 50c.
 
You are moaning because the aluminium is hot? It runs what you wanted it to?

Im sorry but if your argument is temperature only then I think you need to build yourself a pc and just have fun cooling it because the mac is purely a software experience in a gorgeous hardware casing.
 
Ahaha. Sorry but weren't you complaining that because it didn't have a precise delivery time it would set you back in your third year project. Yet two weeks later and it's redundant? lmao.
 
All-in-ones get hot. That's the downside to them. Doesn't matter which manufacturer you choose, they all do it. Personally, unless it was switching itself off from hitting the thermal limit of the CPU, I really wouldn't care.

No, I am not.

I am moaning because the Aliminum get's so hot, that it's hot to touch, I ran a few games for an hour and the temps hit the 80c mark, that shouldn't be happening.

I googled around and it's quite a common thing, this is not satisfactory.

Indeed, A good friend of mine has bought the software PC side and is letting me use it for the most part, but thank you for your condescending comment, it's much appreciated. :)
 
You'll find that most peoples iMacs get hot to the touch in particular places. Mostly round where the CPU is located. There's only one thing you can do and that's get fan control and crank the fans up to full speed when doing something like gaming or keeping the CPU under full load for any length of time. It keeps the temp down, but it's noisy. Real noisy.
 
I love the machine I really do, no doubt about that! but I think because of my nature of use while using PC's/Mac's, it's just not viable to have a Mac, maybe a gaming suitable with the adobe suite installed would be more suitable to myself.
 
why is 80 degrees un-acceptable?? does the computer not function as you wanted it to? i think you are more suffering from buyers remorse and have seen that they are due for an imminent refresh and feel that you need to justify sending it back.

I don't care about the refresh, the ivy bridges are **** at the moment, hitting 80c idle with stock cooling, so no thank you, lmao.

Buyers remorse? nope, I 'was' happy with my purchase.

And I'm not happy with it because 45-50c idle is pathetic and 80c while gaming? LMAO, okay.

I get that a lot of you are biast and what not, but you need to see it from both angles.
 
do you hold your computer whilst gaming?

all i'm saying is 80 degree is not damaging to the chips nor is it detrimental to performance. so what is your problem with it running at that temperature?

are you able to over clock your mac somehow and worried about potential yield of potential overclock?
 
No matter if games have been ported to it, OSX really isn't fantastic with games. Flash and games are the two things that really made my old MacBook angry, I don't know why anyone would actually buy an iMac when they have confessed that one of the main and deciding reasons of the purchase will be gaming. That's a very nice custom gaming rig you can build for the same price as the iMac, if gaming is your thing.

If you bought it to do productive stuff, such as uni work then there shouldn't even be a problem. My old MacBook was fantastic at that sort of stuff, Pages and Keynote were joys to use. Send it back and build a custom PC if you want to play games and are so anal about the temps. Otherwise quit moaning and do something productive with the fantastic computer which you just spunked upwards of £1,000 on. With seemingly little to no research prior to the purchase either.
 
I think you're looking for a reason to get rid of it. If its not for you then just change it for a custom PC. Simple.
 
Those temperatures are not a problem, all iMacs run at similar.

Contrary to what companies that sell enormous and expensive CPU coolers will tell you, computer components will not instantly fail if they get a bit warm.

If you don't like it, you don't like it, but to be considering getting rid of it because it gets warm is silly.
 
The people on this thread aren't being biased. Most of them are just laughing at you.

The mistakes and misunderstandings you've made aren't small.
1. You have bought a piece of equipment which isn't made for gaming, it has above minimal cooling.
2. It's not a problem, they wouldn't release games for Macs if they got so hot they damaged themselves.
3. All macs are like this. My MBA burns me if I leave it on my legs while playing WoW laid in bed.
4. If you have a gaming PC, why didn't you just buy Office on that and use that? I don't see the point of buying a whole new system for uni work.
 
I'd say that your ambient temperatures seem quite high if you're idling at 40-45, but that's still not a big deal.

As for the high temperatures you are complaining about...sorry, but I really don't see the issue unless you touch your iMac as you play games. Computers get hot. I wouldn't be concerned unless it starts overheating.
 
If it was getting hot enough to be a problem then you would also be complaining that the fans sound like a jet engine. If it isn't hot enough to trip the fans to max speed then it isn't hot enough to be an issue.

This tbh. iMacs are meant to be a lot quieter. If you want a gaming PC, by all means buy/build one, but expect it to be noisy and/or take up twice the space.
