Heya everyone,

I just got hold of an iMac G3 for £15 on ebay and I bought to have a little go at some modding.

Basically I want to rip out the CRT and components and replace them with standard components and an LCD Screen.

Basically to start everything I need to discharge the screen. I've read a lot of articles saying I should discharge the screen, but none of them actually explain how.

I only read one article saying the screen will discharge after a week or 2 of being unplugged.

So anyone have any knowledge of this sort of thing?

Im really quite excited, but just a heads up, progress will be a bit slow over the next month or 2 while I finish my degree + move, but expect quite a bit of planning before hand :D

Damn, I totally didn't think of doing this, I had a tangerine g3 imac that was dead which I could've done something like this with.

Sub'd as I'd love to see how this turns out as it'd be cute as hell to have a small server built up in one of these. :)

A great idea and should look really nice when done.

Please be very very carefull when discharging the screen. The anode usually lives under a rubber boot (looks like a suction cup) on the back of the screen.

There are multiple articles on the internet but as always take everything with a pinch of salt. It's not always as simple as discharging the anode. There are resistors that discharge the large power caps on the power supply. If the resistors have failed for whatever reason the caps can still hold enough volts to cause serious problems.

If you want an Idea of what is involved have a look at:

If you don't feel confident in anyway doing it, take it to an electrician or tv shop. Better that than risking it.

Other than that good luck with it and will be nice to see the progress.

R5GTT You are a life saver, I have been looking all over the internet for that exact sort of description, but no where had it.

I picked it up today, will have a little play and take some photos tonight and stick up.

The only niggle is that it hasnt got the cover of the side which hides the connections (I'll show you in the pictures later tonight)

I'm still planning on doing this, hopefully this weekend I can strip everything apart.

The main thing I need to do is discharge the CRT - my main fear is whether there are certain parts I really shouldn't ever touch i.e. when lifting the CRT out of the casing, what can I touch to lift it?

Lots of Googling before I approach anything I think.

Do you know how you are going to conect the screen to the motherboard? I been looking around for info on how this would be done but can't come up with anything.
