Hi,
Im about to make the leap from PC to Mac. I have been thinking about getting a MBP for a while now, but have opted for the iMac as I don't need it to be portable, and I'll be getting a better spec for the money.

I'll be opting for the 21.5" baby of the range... Am I safe to purchase now? Presumably there will not be any hardware announcements affecting this model at the conference? My only other concern is the software... are we expecting to see an update to iLife imminently?

Thanks in advance.

There's no update due to hit the iMac's according to Mac Rumours so I think you're safe to buy now. I think iLife is still on the 09 version, so 10 isn't out yet. However it's only £35 or so from the higher education store so not too pricey if you do buy the new version when it comes out :)

Cheers, think I'll take the plunge this week/next week.

Don't suppose anybody knows how big the box is for a 21.5" iMac? Worried it won't fit in my car!

Apple are really into minimal packaging these days, that shouldn't be a concern.

If that doesn't fit in your car, maybe it's time for a new car instead. :p

The 21.5" uses a worse lcd panel than the 27".

If you can stretch get the 27".

Agreed with EVH, get the 27" if you can stretch to it. The difference is remarkable, the 27" iMac is pretty much the best value desktop on the market at the moment thanks to the incredible screen.

As for size, my new, boxed 27" iMac fitted quite happily on the back seats of a 2002 Corsa C with plenty of room.

I would wait, see below

I was going to get the i7 imac 27 but after a lot of reading i am waiting till apple sort out the mess, now some will say that its not that many out of the 1000's sold but when ppl get 2-3 faulty macs then something is very wrong.

I couldn't quite justify splashing on a new i5 27" iMac so I'm picking up a mint s/hand 24" later on (from the MM). Applecare til May 2012 too so a little peace of mind in that regard

I couldn't quite justify splashing out on a new i5 27" iMac so after I narrowly missed out on a mint s/hand 24" (from the MM) with Applecare til May 2012 I've ordered a new Mac Mini today :D :D

(see what I did there?)

Heh heh heh, it's not an issue - I wasn't even thinking about the possibility of picking up a second hand iMac until yesterday so I'm just as happy now as I was. I'm glad you got the deal and I really hope you get on with your new toy :)

As far as im aware the 21.5" screen is the same technology as the 27", minus the additional pixel density that takes it beyond 1080p. A 27" screen seems a little ridiculous when I'd only be sitting a foot away from it...plus I can't justify the added expense right now unfortunately.

Am I correct in thinking the hardware issues have only been evident in the 27" varients? Or have I just missed other threads?

Thanks in advance.
