Hey guys,

How would the top iMac (with that £40 graphics card upgrade) fair against this for gaming:

Which would be better, would there be much in it?

The 4850 in the Mac is a better card, it just depends how much performance you lose under bootcamp. I've never used it myself so I couldn't say.

It will also depend on what games you're expecting to play.

PCs are always much better for gaming, if you're buying a new computer for gaming then avoid a Mac at all costs.
naah i know that, i'm getting a new iMac and that computer has just been ordered, these are both for work but i like the idea that once 5 o clock hits we can have a decent hours gaming every now and then to chill out :)

there is no way i'd go back to windows, although it is crazy if that PC above is more powerful for around 28% of the price :o - I love apple but that is one HELL of a premium for nice looking hardware and a kick-ass OS...

So you're saying that that PC is better in the gaming field? seemed a bit close to call i thought the iMac has a better processor, and possibly a better graphics card so i was just curious :)

Most of the components especially graphics cards in Apple computers are clocked back due to heat and convection concerns. So will always be slower than that of PCs, plus I'm not so sure the 4850 will be much faster then the 4770 as it is re-badged laptop graphics card.

Though the Mac has DDR3, compared to DDR 2 on the PC you could also overclock the PC too. So lots of options.

Would you honestly want to stay after-hours, when you've just spent all day working?

The last thing I'd want to do is stay there, and blur the boundaries of work/home.

it just depends how much performance you lose under bootcamp.

windows will run natively on your mac under bootcamp so i dont think you will lose performance.

but as someone else has already mentioned: the imac does have laptop parts; they are never as good as thier desktop counterparts.

save time and effort; game on the pc. enjoy the OS on the imac

Some peoples work colleagues are also good friends. I don't see a problem with quick hour of Quake vs your mates then off to the pub for a beer.

Staying behind to play a single player game however, is a bit odd :)

+1 to all this - nought wrong with with a bit of COD if its been a hard day :) - good for the team too :)

single player? hell no i'd just go home...

Nice idea having a quick gaming session after work, really depends if you like your colleagues and work environment though. Some people on here obviously don't :p

well we have a relatively laid back working environment and everyone gets along great :) - work hard play hard and all that, makes for a good balance ;)

never mind EVH, you'll find a job like that one day :p (only windin' you up buddy ;))

You are paying a nice premium for the apple design etc but I dont see how the spec is the same mate. You are getting a brilliant 24" monitor instead of a ok 22", the processor is a 2.5 instead of the 3.06 on the mac, the ram is faster and you get a 1tb hd instead of 500gb. Lastly you get a keyboard and mouse.

I reckon that if you specced that up with a similar quality monitor you wouldnt get too much difference. In my oppinion the iMac is about the best value out of the computers apple do.

Based on that I reckon it should be able to handle pc games through bootcamp pretty well compared to the other spec.

just ordered the iMac, i saw sense in the closing minutes and specced it down a bit...

went for the 2.93 version with 640GB hdd but went for the top graphics card... £160 odd quid just isn't value for money for .13GHz and some more HDD space (I've always been conservative on space anyway, my 120GB macbook is still doing me just fine...)

I reckon i'll put 140 gig towards a windows partition which leaves a nice neat 500 gig for os x (bit of OCD coming out there :p)

Think i've got a nice mac there, very exciting so it is :)

already got a 500gig firewire drive for time machine :)

did you mean time capsule?

by the way, which elements of the new iMac are upgradable? ram and hdd?
