iMac's and after market SSD's

I'd do it myself, but I don't think I can be bothered putting up with any potential headaches if I do have to ever take it in for service as the first thing they ask you to do is restore it to it's factory condition in regards to any hardware upgrades you've done yourself.

It's a 2011 27" i7 with the 6970m 2GB (12GB RAM). I bought it in august and I still have the free education Apple care (+ free uplift) and I don't really want to void that. It's proved far too useful on my Macbook Pro.

Nope, the stores don't sell SSDs nor will they upgrade machines in store with hard drives (Mac Pro excepted)
 
I have just upgraded my 21.5" 2010 imac with an ssd. I went down the route of replacing the optical with hte ssd asi hardly use it. It was a very easy job however nerveracking!!!!

All i can say is what a difference this machine is now. It just flys. I have barley seen a beachball. I too followed the ifixit. Guide which made it super easy. If you are on the fence go for it. You will not be dissapointed.
 
My new SSD arrived this morning, set about replacing my failed HD, had to do a bit of improvisation to mount the new SSD in the old HD place and put a link of wire in the Temp sensor, but so far so good, my iMac is currently downloading OSX lion to install, so off out for a couple of hrs, fingers crossed it will be done when I get back (:
 
This Apple fan/sensor addition to later iMac's, did that occur in the mid 2010 iMac's? I have a mid 2010 i7 27" iMac and thinking bout chucking a SSD in, would I have the sensor issue with my iMac?

Worth pointing out I want to REPLACE my HDD that is in there now with a SSD, I don't want two HDD's in there.
 
Been asking around Apple Service providers. Just had one tell me they would charge £688 to install an Apple SSD (they didn't specify the size) and obviously would not void the warranty.

Would cost £600 to install a non Apple SSD (I asked if I could bring my own) and would void the warranty.

Yeah.. i'll keep asking around.. but I'll probably do it myself :p
 
It'll be that price because I think Apple SSDs start at 256GB for a start... and being an "Apple drive" it's massively more expensive. On the Apple website if you want to add a £256 SSD they want to charge £480 for the privilege.
 
Do it yourself. I did and it wasn't too tricky in the end. Just take your time and don't rush it.

Was it the 2011 model? They make it more difficult with their temperature sensors. The easiest option is to just outright replace the optical drive, but that is only on SATA2 which isn't really that important to me (I like SSDs for the response times, mostly) but I do sometimes use the optical drive for ripping my DVDs.

I do have my windows machine I can use for ripping stuff so that isn't a huge issue, but I would have always preferred to get it done properly.

What did you use to mount the SSD in the old HDD place in the end? A caddy? Or some form of sticky tape/velcro?

Also, how do you go about shorting the temp sensor?
 
Mines a 2010 model. I use HDD Fancontrol to regulate the fan and it works perfectly.

I used some thick double sided pads to mount the SSD drive.
