Image hotlinking... why?

How do you know if you are hotlinking? Does it depend upon the source?

We have to check the properties on posted images.

I must admit, the hotlinking rule doesn't make much sense when it comes to websites like the bbc which would never replace the image with something dodgy obviously, and everyone pays for the website via the tv license so are entitled to the bandwidth.

That doesn't make it right.. That would be like taking an ariel connection from your next neighbour and saying that's fine because they pay the TV license.. Besides, how would you decide which websites have the available bandwidtch from those that don't? It's easier just to say no hotlinking altogether.

There are of course plenty of sites which it would always be safe to hotlink from as they'd never do anything untoward but to be honest it's so much easier to have a blanket rule covering all hotlinking instead of a list of permitted sites especially considering how simple it is to host an image nowadays:)
