I'd say the best images are ones that require very little PP. Anything more than levels/contrast/saturation and the image probably should have been taken better to start with. There are of course exceptions to the rule but I'd not say PP is the key, I'd say getting the photo as close to what you want at the time of taking is, you should ideally just be using the computer to get the final image back to how it looked at the time - and having your exposure, composition, white balance, point of focus etc are more important than just taking a snapshot and relying on PP later.
Just make sure if your using photoshop, that you do all your levels etc in adjustment layers so your not altering any original image data until your done tweaking
