it may have been a rear projection screen... I'm not sure. I'm not clued up on any of this.

Beautiful screen, in my opinion, the nicest one to look at (certainly in the flesh), I will be getting it for my room soon when we get the 50" Pioneer.

Thats not really shocking mate. DVD's only output in standard definition and HDTV's have to scale the image up which reduces quality. As soon as you upgrade to an HDTV you will notice the drop in quality also since none of them handle standard definition sources as well as a good CRT. Your fathers LCD will shine when using HD-DVD/Blue-ray, SkyHD, Xbox 360 etc.... However a good upscaling DVD player or upscaling through ffdshow on a PC will improve the picture quality of a standard DVD on an HDTV immensely. Out of interest what is your father using to connect his DVD player to his LCD?

he's not much of a techy really. He's using a Sony 5.1 surround package (can't remember model number). Unfortunately it doesn't have component out so he's having to resort to the normal scart.

I didn't realise HD TVs had to scale images that weren't in HD. Useful bit of info, thanks.

We've already tried the Xbox on it and you're right it does look good. Just thought DVDs would have looked slightly better (but then I guess it's the player's fault rather than the tv)

Ahh well that would definately explain it!

Hook up any good DVD player (upscaling or otherwise) to his LCD through DVI/HDMI/component and it should look fantastic.

was gonna take my Denon round there but don't fancy undoing all my wiring work lol.

I notice the panasonic link above points to plasma screens that aren't HD ready. would have thought they would be.... ? some on ebay are HD ready and some aren't. Confused now.

I really wouldn't buy off ebay if I were you mate, not something that expensive. Just a personal word of advice.

HD ready means they have a HDMI port. My Sony Plasma screen (link posted above) is not "HD Ready" but it has component and 1024x1024 so it will quite easily do 720p (and it looks stunning!).
