Guys ,

I am getting the x-25m ssd drive soon , and was wondering the best way to put windows on it? if i use a imaging program like ghost ( never used on before ) does that copy all my installed program and stuff. So if i am right , once i have the image , i put it on my new drive and all programs, drivers etc are all there working etc??....sorry dont really understand it all.

Cant say i have ever used Ghost. But i do use Acronis but it should work the same. After you have installed everything you want on your C Drive just run the program and it will make a full back up of everything that is on C Drive. Then store the back up on another drive. You cant really store the backup file on C Drive

You can actually store the backup on your c: drive.

I am no expert on SSD drives but you may need to add the mass controller drivers for you new drive when restoring the image onto it, otherwise you may well get a BSOD, but hopefully windows will be ok with generic driver for your new HD.

You may still hit a BSOD though as you are using some dissimilar hardware, i.e the new drive, but i think you will be ok there it's usually if you have a new motherboard when the problems occur.

Not sure if Ghost standard ed does dissimilar hardware but i know they do an enterpirse edition somewhere that does. Acronis do also.

Speed, think about it, after installing, updating, configuring not to mention you will lose all you installed apps, well it can actually take up to 3-4 hours to do all that, i could clone a drive in 3-4mins.

The other drive could also go down, all i meant was that you could store it on the same drive as you are imaging. Your right though, it would be wiser to have a seperate drive with all your images.

Just to say again on this topic, it is very likely you will get a BSOD if the software you use doesn't have universal hardware restore, it is to do with the windows hal, actually talking about hal, if using win 7 i don't think 7 even uses the hal anymore, so i am not sure how 7 will cope with this at all, it may actually work out better, anyone else know?
 
I see what your saying ;) The only reason i said not to store it on C Drive was just in case that drive goes down or you cant access it. But as you say any drive can go down. This is the reason i put the back up on my D Drive and a external drive as well.

Thanks for the reply guys , i think i will just do a clean install on the ssd drive , then once fully up and running i will create my back up image , should not take long to install os on an ssd anyway.
