The ride is the South Downs Way in July/August time, I think its classed as "cross country"? If I was to take part I would probably look at getting something newer.I would check what sort of ride it is because you might find you don't enjoy it much on that bike. Things have changed a lot in the past 30 years and what used to be considered quite challenging is now super tame because modern mountain bikes are so capable. Big knobbly tyres, 29" wheels, dropper posts, low tyre pressures for grip.
Any recommendations in the <£1000 bracket would be greatly appreciated
