I'd agree, most have diagrams and tables that are easier to read on an iPad.

Yep. Kindles are great if you purely read books, like you say though anything else, diagrams and what have you, you want a colour screen.

I went for the Kindle Fire HD as its almost a bridge between the two.

As small as a kindle, but still a functional tablet. I mainly read fantasty fiction anyway but I do have work related PDF's and use it for studying as well so it's useful for that.

New shoes and headphones now I'm going to be a city boy for the winter.

I ended up getting a nexus 7 for graphics etc earlier in the year after years of my 505 and spending about a year debating if I should get a large screen Kobo reader or a tablet.

Then I got the new kindle as well, one for reading normal books, and one for graphic novels, pdf's etc:)

I couldn't spend any real amount of time reading an LCD display as it hurts my eyes over time and I have a tendency once I really get into a book to spend 3-6 hours reading it* (battery life also comes into it).

*I think my longest reading session was about 8-9 hours almost non stop, over night when I really got into a long book and couldn't put it down (fortunately I had nothing to do the next day).

I find more than anything its screen definition, brightness and the colour of the text that affect mine.

So for mine I have the brightness on about 1/4, the Fire HD screen is fantastically sharp so no issues there and I have the page and text colour set to that yellowy colour. Looks great :)

Only grudge with it, it's a little heavy to hold with one hand for too long, but I have little hands. I'll upgrade to the HDX if this thing ever gives up the ghost! :) - love it though. I use it everyday without fail :)

9 hours in one go? I haven't done that since I was in school :D
