The king is dead.
Long live the king!
Top - victorinox swiss army knife closest to the type 'mountaineer'.
I've had it for 29 years and carried it for just about every day of that.
It's had some abuse and has come through it relatively well all things considered:
Toothpick & tweezers first to be lost.
Snapped the awl in half.
Snapped the tip of the file off.
Broke the spring on the scissors.
Broke off the end of one of the scales.
Re-glued the scales on at least twice for each side.
Lost the victorinox steel logo from the other scale.
Numerous scratches and dents in the scales and the frame.
Both the large and the small blade are worn flat from their 'leaf' shape by constant sharpening over the years.
Bottom - the replacement; the victorinox 'mountaineer' for 2015?
Identical to my original with the addition of a hook thing, and a small screwdriver inside the cork-screw (purchased separately)
There's a couple of design changes over my original - the scissor blades are pinned instead of using a captive screw (that allowed for wear adjustment - time will tell if this is an improvement or not).
The file is of thicker stock and more aggressive on both sides (maybe my old one was just worn out).
The stamping on the main blade is slightly different.
The back-springs are located differently to accommodate the hook thing.
For under 30 quid you cannot go wrong.
I own other victorinox products, but this is the one I always carry. Hopefully it will last at least as long as its predecessor.
