To be fair, the power connector was properly knackered (still need to fix it properly, but will wait until after I do the screen) so they may have thought it was completely dead despite claiming it worked...
I inherited one of those from the parents, just be aware that the screen cables also have a tendency to slip on these machines, so even though you've replaced it, if it starts to flicker, you might need to have it apart to nip it back tight. I've had to do that a couple of times.
Thanks for the tip. Haven't changed the cable yet, taking it apart and poking it seems to have got it working OK for the time being. If you squeeze the corner of the base then it gets confused and thinks a monitor is plugged in
