Hi all. I hope this thread is allowed. I'm just trying to gather some opinions on what people like/dislike about Imageshack in terms of features, usability, reliability, etc. Any responses would be greatly appreciated :).

Not thinking of making an image upload site are you....almost like, if you wanted to upload something, you could just...uploadit? :D

I don't use Imageshack enough to know anything about it really, so I can't help out I'm afraid. But one thing I find annoying is how sometimes people manage to post a thumbnail-sized image in a forum thread and clicking on it leads to Imageshack's homepage. I don't get that.

Damn, busted. I miss the old girl :(.

I think the thumbnail issue is caused by the fact that they've actually uploaded a tiny image and, when you use the 'standard' image code (without thumbnail), it automatically adds a link back to Imageshack. What I've typed makes absolutely no sense but I think you'll get the gist of it ;).

It's not as good as it used to be either :( .

Not a big fan of Imageshack, similar point of view, you click on a link and then it says to get a full res pic click on the picture. It never seems to work and you're left looking at a badly artifacted image.

Jokester

I dont like imageshack because you cant upload batch's of pictures, but i do like because of it's resizing utility :)

It would be good if there was client side resizing, and compression, like when I have a 3Mb camera photo it would be nice if it was re compressed and resized my end instead of having to upload tho whole thing first.

Also a Firefox plugin would be nice, or a rightclick explorer "upload" button.

To make any kind of dent it's going to need to be infinitely better than Imageshack and of course UploadIt which is over 3 years old now and around 2 years since I sold it.

Technically it'll be a big step forward. It'll be quick, very quick. Load balanced and UK based. I've got ~3000mbit/sec to play with whereas, 3.5 years ago, I was relying on leased US based dedicated servers. Should be fun ;).

It's not really intended to make any money, it's more of an experiment and technical challenge.

Benjo - Batch uploads, already covered. Resizing/thumbnailing/watermarking I've been involved with a lot for a recent commercial project so I can bring some of that knowledge and experience over. There's obviously a tradeoff between image quality/featureset and CPU availability.

Edit: Client side resizing is tricky. It could be done with a Java applet but I've played with that for the aforementioned commercial project and nothing which is currently available on the market is reliable enough. I think the answer is to develop something from scratch, possibly a firefox plugin as you said which will resize the image and 'upload it' :p to the web in one fell swoop.

Erm, I have a right click Upload to imageshack button. :p

You can download it from the site, then select the direct link to image and put it in the tags yourself and your sorted. :)

Pros:
PERMANENT HOSTING. I cannot stress this enough. Hosts that delete images after X amount of time are really annoying.
No silly bandwidth restrictions, per-domain or per user.
Community support - plugins, shell extensions etc.

Cons:
Absolutely billions of adverts. Although adverts are largely a necessary evil, Macbeth took it a bit far IMO.
Spammy link back to the ImageShack homepage on every image by default.

Not much to it, it's just an image host really.

Things you could add:
Archive support
Easier way to bulk upload images (á la Gallery's "add another field" ad infinitum).

I cannot stand imageshacks popups and thumbnails.

Other than that I don't use image hosting like that as I have my own gallery so Im probably not of much use :p

BTW, the coolest image host ever is WaffleImages:

Here's how it works. When you upload an image to the main WaffleImages site, the master server distributes it out to two different mirrors, or slave servers. The mirror information is stored in a database. The URL that comes back is for the master server, but when accessed, it picks a mirror (balancing the load among all available ones) and serves up a redirect. Popular images automatically get more mirrors.

Images never, ever go down and are always fast. It's limited to a single domain only however :(

Good Points:

Thumbnail Images - smaller versions of the image.
OnClick Highlight Code - You don't have to select all the code, you just click the box and it highlights it.
Firefox + Windows Plugins - Can upload from desktop or firefox
No Bandwidth limits
Perminant Hosting
Allows enough space - for my use anyways - i am not a photographer so it may be different for others
Don't have to sign up - you can for extra features, but you can just pop on there to upload an image when you need.
Downtime - Not often down, if down at all?
Easy to remember URL - small, catchy and easy to remember URL.
Image Download Speeds - pretty quick in my opinion.
Site Layout - Nice, simple and fast loading site (if it wasn't for all the ads)

Bad points:

Site Speed - the site itself is slow, took ages from the point of getting to the site to getting the code, although the image loading is generally an ok speed.
Ads - the user is plastered with ads whenever using the site, it's ridiculous, makes the site way to busy.
Links to site - When you click a hotlinked image, it takes you to their site
Preview in their site - When you click a thumbnail it previews in their site instead of a direct link to the image.
US Based - would be nice to have a uk based image hoster, fast one.

Nice extras to have:

Borders - A choice of border styles, like for presentation (of desktops maybe?)
Thumbnail Text - Maybe have "Click to Enlarge" instead of the usually details for the thumbnail text.
Upload from a different site - Would be nice to be able to upload an image from my homepage, but still go through your site obviously.
Rotating Signatures - maybe the ability to create and host on your site?

Hope that helps!

what I hate about imageshack is the fact that you can't find images that you've uploaded already if you lose the link.

Can't stand the way it comes out with about 10 different codes and if you select the wrong one you get a tiny image which isn't clickable.

Prefer using Photobucket.

My Images :)

EDIT: Love ImageShack & can't fault it at-all. Been using it a lot lately, especially My Slideshows to share pictures with friends, over PhotoBox :D
