Its 1996/97 or whatever. Internet is not mainstream or common at all.

FOr me I was a kid so as an adult cant compare, always had it.

Uni, research, study, shopping, socialising, gaming,...etc..

No internet, would be sad.

Some of us had internet before that, but it was far less useful.
Things were no better, no worse. Just different.
The same will be said of any future technological advances.

I'd guess that for most users here that 'imagine if' could be replaced with 'remember when' there was no internet. Or am I way off and everyone was born in the 90's?

GET OFF MY LAWN.

I remember nagging my dad for a dial up modem in the mid 90s so I could play Quake on dial up and download topless pics of Jayne Middlemiss.

It's like mobiles. I remember fondly being able to go out and be out of communication with everyone. Now the expectation is that I'll be reachable and that if I'm not there is something wrong.
I miss that.

Oh FFS, I've just checked your profile. I thought you were old like me but you're not, you're in your twenties!

You can get off my lawn, too

Old before my time ;)

30 next year, mind you.

+1 I feel old at 29 growing up without these things. I remember playing caeser 3 at home on the pc and learning there was a 13mb map editor on the net. So I downloaded it at school cause we didnt have internet. And I had to take it home on 13 floppy disks. It took me 3 days cause one or two of them always corrupted by the time I got them home :(
As for mobiles. I remember my first brick of a phone, how it would survive people throwing it around the concrete playground when picking on me. Couldnt do that now :p

I am glad that i grew up when i did. When i was young there was no internet, i grew up in south africa, we didn't even have a satellite tv until i was 14. Even then we only had it for a year.

I used to go out side and play cricket and football. :o I used to play in the gutter in the street with cars and stuff.

I was lucky enough to play with 8bit gaming consoles with 1001 in 1 cartridge with 100 variations of the same game. 16bit mega drive come on the scene it changed everything. But i was not rich enough to afford one, then the playstation 1. Still not rich enough. Then i went on my first pc at my friends house and then i got my own p133mhz and a year later i got my first 33.6k modem and dialup. The was the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning im not sure...

Heheh I remember that stuff. We had a second hand atari 2600 and had to rent a playstation 1 from blockbusters.

When i was in my teens i still had dialup until i was 20+ as it was too expensive in SA. I used to live with my mom and she could not afford to pay the internet bill. So i used to steal the internet, in the middle of the night, i would run a cable from my room down stairs in to the phone. Some nights when my mom would wake up she would rip it out and start shouting at me, but i kept doing it :D

I used to download spreadsheets of hacked dialup accounts from guys from IRC and get free dialup.

Meh...I've spent more of my life without the internet than with it. Crikey, I can remember when Pong was the most amazing thing ever.......

I think for some, the internet is a bad thing, your life would have been a lot easier without easy access to all these conspiracy theories that you subscribe to :p
