Hey you guys,

Me and a mate plan to move to australia next september (2010). I have a sister as a resident over there, my work (.NET technologoes) is on their demanded jobs list and i will have a degree in multimedia by then... and my m8 has an uncle and auntie over there who are Australian citizens... So on these merits i assume we will both be able to obtain residency.

As far as thinking about moving goes, where do we start? Weve decided we want to move to melbourne, but, what do we have to consider now? I know theirs a **** load of research to be done and i havent a clue where to start. I mean things like, Banks, Where to live, healthcare, flights, jobs, driving license etc.

We wont get a chance to visit the area before hand either, so everything would have to be done long distance.

PS - how long would it take to process the resident forms? Or do you think its best to get a 1 years working visa and apply for residency when were over there.

I know its a lot of questions, but i hope anyone can shed some light on the whole thing

Cheers

Start applying for your visa now. It takes bloody ages and the situation relating to in demand roles can change at any time.

One of my mates has been applying for 18 months now and has had to cancel his flights once due to a change in the in demnad list depriving him of some of the points he required on his original application.

Would it be better to apply for the 1 years working Visa first, just to get over there?

Then applying for the full residency once your there?

I think that's what most of my mates have done. One had sponsorship (a job) when he arrived and the other was going over as self-employed and she's now an IT contractor over there (no idea how the contractor market works down there).

Yes ive been last year and im going this august, but im not going near melbourne, im going to airlie beach, queensland for a month

So if i applied for residency now, while my jobs in demand, does it have an expiry date? ie - i must be living in the country before a certain date or the visa runs out?

Yeah, sorry I don't know much about it. I immigrated to spain but it's part of the EU so easy. Probably the best advice I can give is to go to Lonely Planet's forums and ask there.

Good luck!

Don't you need so much savings a and sponsorship over there as well? A mate just got rejected cause his Uncle would only sponsor his sister so he will have to wait.

You really should go to Melbourne, people either love it or hate it, as the weather is even more unpredictable than here. People living in Queensland LOL at the fact that it can rain and then be sunny and cold (less than 20 Celsius) all in one day.
you may also need police checks and you will need to be screened for things like TB both of which cost money and only last a year, so make sure you can get in the country within the 12 months.

And AFIK you still need an AIDS test? Which screws you in this country if you don't end up going as it affects your insurance and stuff no matter what reason you had to have one.
