At the risk of being accused of teaching grandparents how to suck eggs I really think an impact driver is a worthwhile addition to any tool kit. It`s one of those things you won`t use often but when you do need it it`s a life saver.

I used to use mine on my cars (when I did the work on them ! ) but the latest time I used it was removing the blades from my garden shredder to sharpen them. Three of the four allen headed bolts just would not come undone, in fact the allen bit just rounded off ! So I got a bigger allen key bit, filed it off so it was a very tight fit for the (by now slightly rouded) allen head, then used the impact driver and a big hammer, and out they all came no problem ! Apparently it`s not just the torque provided by the driver but also the shock that loosens the bolts. Oh yes, plus the fact the drive bit is being forced onto the screw at the same time as it applies the torque.
Incidentally, I once read that if you haven`t got an impact driver the next best thing is for one of you to apply the torque whilst your mate hits the nut with a hammer ! I`ve never tried it myself but it would still apply the shocvk to the nut/bolt I suppose.
