Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Errrm, nothing important really.

Just this:

And this:

Oh and this:

The advice comes from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) which argues that the removal of healthy teeth is pointless and exposes patients to the risk of nerve damage, infection, bleeding and in extreme cases death.

Apart from that I wouldn't worry too much.

All of my wisdom teeth are impacted, but there's no need for them to come out at the moment. One of them caused the tooth it grew under to decay from the inside though, so I had to get it out, which was a similar experience. The removal itself was painful, although I'm not sure how much pain afterwards was due to the tooth coming out and how much was a complication that left my nerves open to the air :(.

To say anything else would be verging on medical advise, but I'd recommend checking out any side effects or complications with your dentist. I hate the dentist, so I'd definately say to avoid the procedure if you don't need it ;).

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed in one go. The procedure was done under sedation because of which, I have hardly any recollection of the actual procedure or the pain involved during it.

I had all of mi ne out at once as well. I was under local anesthetic and was breathing nitrous oxide. The procedure itself was fairly mundane as far as oral surgery is concerned. He cut the gums, dug a little bit, yanked with some pliers, and eventually all come out. Recovery took about two weeks until I could eat properly again. In the mean time my mouth was very sore and it would ache if I did anything strenuous like lifting boxes at work or climbing up a stairwell too quickly. It sucked but at least it didn't last very long. Now that they're out my teeth are no longer getting crooked and my jaw no longer hurts, both due to overcrowding.

I had my two left side wisdom teeth out and was done like yours. It didnt hurt during the proceedure like you say but damn did it ache like mad after the sedative wore off.

Had all of mine taken out uner general anestethic the Thursday before last. Jaw was very stiff to start with and the teeth beside them hurt for a while but they seem fine now (except the stitches need removing).

Had one out although it wasn't impacted. no pain during the procedure although he tried his best due to not giving me enough anaesthetic. Just a quick word from me and another jab was applied ;)

After that they gave me some pain killers which I took every 6 hours and apart from feeling uncomfortable trying to eat without getting anything in the hole it was fine.

But impacted ones are meant to be worse due to having to cut into the gums. Heard stories of possible nerve damage etc but if it needs doing it needs doing.

My two lower ones are impacted but don't cause any problems unless I try and open my mouth really really wide then I can hear / feel the tooth scraping on the jaw bone :p but theres no way i'm having them done unless they start causing problems.

Eeek  Getting my two lower ones done soon and I'm dreading it, I've hardly ever had any work done on my teeth before and NEVER been sedated. I'm dreading it.

I'm waiting for an appointment to get two more of my wisdom teeth out.

When being assesed, she told me how she'd have to remove the bottom one. Cut gum open, cut tooth in half, and remove each half individualy - before grinding down the bone.

Oh well, I've had the other lower wisdom tooth whipped out - so I know what I'm letting myself in for. :D

Had 2 removed from bottom set about 1/2 yr ago. Sedated so don't remember anything. Fairly painful afterwards but pain and swelling went away after about 2 weeks and i was pretty normal after that.

I was in exactly the same position. I suggest you opt for sedation. If you do, you probably wont rememeber anything about the procedure as you will only be semi-conscious.

It does take about 2 weeks to recover after the procedure, but personally, the pain after the procedure was nowhere near to the pain I was experiencing before it (due to the teeth sheering off and the nerves being exposed).

Dont worry about it dude.

I had my lower right one removed for the same reason. I was under for the whole length of time so don't remember much, though every now and then I get toothache where I didn't before. But it's sooo rare I haven't bothered getting it sorted again.

I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed when I was 19 back in 2001.

Basically, I had a wisdom tooth growing at a diagonal angle towards one of my molars.

When they removed the wisdom tooth, I was absolutely shocked by what it looked like. The root was so big, it looked a bit like a dog's tooth.

Nevertheless, having the tooth removed was no where near as bad as the tooth ache I had endured for months before hand!

I went to see a specialist on Wednesday and was told I should have all 5 of my wisdoms out as a couple are showing the beginnings of decay :(

That's right, 5! I have an upper-right 9, apparently it's quite rare.

According to my dentist the upper wisdoms are easy to remove but the bottoms are more difficult due to being buried in the jawbone and the risks of nerve damage. Not looking forward to it.

Whats all this sedation malarkey? Ive had both my upper ones out on a local anaesthetic. Wouldn't says its painfull, but its not exactly pleasant either. Its just a weird crunching, ripping sensation as the tooth wiggles around, then... pop its out. There might be quite a bit of bleeding, but it soon stops and heals up. I suspect I might have to have the two lower ones removed eventually, as there is no way near enough space down there for them to go where they want to.

At the hospital last week, I was told my top ones should just "flick out". :p

It's the bottom ones which will make your toes curl for a fortnight after.:(

Thank God I had my bottom one out under general. :D

i'm a dental nurse, and tbh with you the actual procedure isn't painful cos your under local. but for a little while after, you get slight pain from the areas, like you do after some normal extractions.

overall, it's worth getting them done :)
