Impatience running thin £1600 spec

For gaming surely he would be better off with a core2 setup and better graphics card/monitor.

I7 is only needed for tri-SLI or crossfireX tbh.

If it's a retail or upgrade 32bit version of Vista then you can get a 64bit disk from Microsoft for the princely sum of £7.20 inc delivery.

It was an upgrade so hopefully I be ok if not then I guess I have to buy a 64bit version or borrow one ;)

On the gaming side, he will be getting less fps, for more money.

Just not sure if i7 is right for this budget.

it's a 24" monitor and a gtx285 card, o will run games fine, he is also doing 3d work - not just gaming. which will benefit by the i7. The i7 also runs games faster than the D2C anyway. For this budget it would be silly going for anything other than i7.

It's cheaper to throw in a 2nd or 3rd gtx285 when games start slowing, than having to build a complete new system.

OK guys This is the currrent setup after listening to all your views:

I decieded to scrape the speakers and headphones for now :) , probably invest in them next month, I got rid of the blue ray for now as well as i doubt i be using that anytime soon.

I left the Razor Mouse :) but i guess that personal taste

Well what do you think....................... probably be tweaking again after your views LOL

Spec looks great to me, nice one.

My only change would be case and mouse, but that is largely personal preference rather than any underlying problems or performance. I have a P182 as I prefer the cable management and it being a bit more quiet and refined. I have a razer deathadder as it was recommended by the good people of this forum over anything else in the price range at the time.

If you like it, stick with it, should have a very nice, capable system there, with room for upgrade (e.g. another gfx).

Same as mine. Go here to order a 64bit disk.

As for the spec i would change the mouse, case and psu.

£115 for a 620w psu is obscene. They are not bullet proof as there were quite a few failures recently. I would have said go for a Zalman or PC Power and Cooling 600w but they are out of stock.

The Logitech MX-518 is a very good mouse. It's also a lot cheaper.

Personally i hate the tacky looking 300/900/1200 cases but cases are a personal choice and it's really only tou who can choose which one you want.

since you are buying a aftermarket HSF, you may as well buy a i920 OEM instead Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - OEM

save a few quid and get 3x2gb ram not 6x1gb, this will free up slots if you ever need more ram in the future Corsair 6GB DDR3 XMS3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz (3x2GB) Triple Channel DDR3 (TR3X6G1600C9)

total savings £25

PS invest in better mobo, like a gigabyte UD5 Gigabyte EX58-UD5 Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard (basically same as the extreme without the passive cooling kit) which is good overclocker, this will help you down the line since you don't upgrade often

As mentioned in the post above and just so you know, the HSF your thinking of ordering will not work on the 1366 socket, nor will the tuniq as someone mentioned. I had the tuniq tower and as much as I love it have sold it as im upgrading to i7 and went with the noctua 1366 HSF. Cant tell you yet how good this is because my memory hasn't arrived but the rest of the system is hooked up and ready to go. But i think the noctua is the only good HSF available for the i7. You could buy the thermalright with the adaptor but then its coming close in cost to the noctua. Also if you have to buy thermal paste add another £5-7 which brings it to £50 anyway. The noctua includes the amazing NT-H1 thermal paste which is really good, on par with OCZ's Freeze Extreme in tests.
