Import Duties and Tariffs

We are talking about VAT, hence the term "tax".

No, we are not talking about VAT, we are talking about import tariffs

VAT is completely different and is not imposed to protect the economy from foreign influence, its imposed for a number of reasons including state revenue generation. No idea why you are talking about VAT though.

Totally true

VAT is totally different to import tariffs/tax.

Now we understand why Energize doesn't understand this!

VAT - To pay the state services - police, fire, government, NHS, public schools etc...

Import tariffs - to increase trade within the country and to protect the economy

It's a tax on goods just like tariffs, part of the same problem which is why I am talking about it, they are all a drain on us.

It is not part of the same 'problem' as there is no 'problem'.

There is no relevancy to talk about VAT in an Import duties/tariffs thread.

It's a different from of 'tax' applied for different reasons, and isn't what the OP is asking about.

Nobody but you is talking about VAT. Go and start a VAT thread if you wish to complain about VAT.

I'm complaining about both.

The TITLE of this thread even says 'IMPORT DUTIES'.

Yeah and lots of people use it to refer to VAT.

Often the term duty is used to refer to VAT by the average person.

I think you'll find you're wrong on that one too. I have never heard of such a term used for VAT. Please, do your research before posting.

Try typing define: Duty in google....

  • a government tax on imports or exports; "they signed a treaty to lower duties on trade between their countries"
  • In economics, a duty is a kind of tax, often associated with customs, a payment due to the revenue of a state, levied by force of law. It is a tax on certain items purchased abroad. Properly, a duty differs from a tax in being levied on specific commodities, financial transactions, estates, etc. ...
  • Tax. That is, an import duty is a tariff.

People do not class Import Duties as VAT. Please understand this!

I'm complaining about both.

That's basically like making a post about what car you should buy in a thread about cooking. Its TOTALLY DIFFERENT!

Yeah and lots of people use it to refer to VAT.

NO THEY DO NOT!

Why? Why not complain about the neighbours as well whilst you are at it

Anyway, you are talking rubbish and trying to dig your way out of a hole - you implied that the economic rationale I explained for import duty was wrong and cited VAT as a reason why it was wrong. It's quite clear you came into this thread with the wrong end of the stick and now wont let go.

Yeah and lots of people use it to refer to VAT.

Nobody refers to VAT as 'import duty' unless they are completely wrong.

The correct response is to say 'ooops, I am clearly wrong, I shall now leave you to discuss import duty'. Or offer an opinion on import duty.

Loads of people refer to VAT, excise duty and customs duty as just "duty" or "customs charges", not saying it's correct, just common usage by many.

Multiple times in the past I have complained about duty in the same way, you should know as you responded to me.

This thread title is 'IMPORT DUTY'. It is clear which duty the question in this thread relates to. You answered a question on import duty as if it was a question on VAT when it was nothing of the sort.

He specifically asked why we pay 'IMPORT DUTIES' and you provided an answer.

Quite why you prolong this by continuing to argue I've no idea. You are just making yourself look more and more silly.

This thread isnt about VAT and never has been.

or "customs charges

Nobody calls VAT a 'customs charge'. If they do, they are not worthy of discussion or inclusion just like somebody who called a car an elephant wouldnt be worthy of discussion or inclusion.

Yes, there are lots of people.... Fox, myself and....

I've never ever ever ever heard anyone refer to VAT as Import Duty

I've never come across this before and I have to talk about import duties and VAT every day.

the other people posted in this thread disagree with you.

Still going to keep hammering away?

I just always find is amusing to see you quibble over semantics. :D

semantics?! You are trashing a thread by calling a bucket a spade and arguing that it's rubbish for digging because it doesnt have a handle, and you accuse those telling you to just go away of quibbling over semantics?!
