Import Duties and Tariffs

And that changes the fact that I've come across people using the terms interchangeably, how?

Ok, lets start. You said.

Often the term duty is used to refer to VAT by the average person.

Everyone else in this thread disagreed that they related 'duties' to VAT.

You seemed to have changed your stance from 'the average person' to 'ive come across people...'. Please stick to one point in future.

Nobody uses the terms interchangeably.

Why would anyone call VAT an import duty

Because many don't understand how the import tax system works? Just as people refer to the pc tower as the hard drive, two different things but people still use the terms interchangeably.

Including you? Just admit you dont know anything about tax.

You are the one who replied to a question on import duty with an answer about VAT.

You must have missed the myriad of posts where I differentiate between VAT and duty.

And I wasn't referring specifically to vat but all taxes applied.

Energize is correct in that when *a lot* of people get that letter from Parcelforce that says they are holding your parcel until fees are paid, they moan about being stung for import tax.

It's just a turn of phrase.

*In my experience*.

No need to, thanks.

We were all talkiing about import tariffs and why they exist, he came in to sound off about VAT.

Read it again. You'll find that it was Monserrat who started that.
