There may be a thread about essential or important apps/programs for PC users but this one is kind of directed at the PC gaming audience. What apps would you reccomend that would help in gaming for the newcomers or the regular chaps?

I for one am new to PC gaming and as far as I know Steam is a pretty vital for all of us, but what else is needed?

Give us your opinions/suggestions!

Steam
MSI Afterburner
Mumble

That's pretty much all I have installed on this machine - everything else is web services on my fileserver :)

On the subject of Afterburner, how do you capture video with it? I've assigned a hotkey but it does nothing when I try to record.

I'm not looking to oc the gpu so it's all I need from the program right now and dont fancy paying for Fraps if AB does the same for free.

To be honest unless you are an avid bencher and like to see high numbers I never understood why you need FPS meters. If the FPS is crap you can tell while playing as the game becomes choppy and in some case very hard to play. If you can play with relative ease and you are not getting moster slow donw in graphically intense areas then why would you need to monitor.

Reading this made me think

http://www.100fps.com/how_many_frames_can_humans_see.htm

do we really need massively high frame rates at all ? If the games FPS is synched with the monitor refresh rate surely then you would get the best visual experience.

Before the flames I freely admit to not being an expert in this field. I remember in the old days squeezing everything I could out of my voodoo3 to get the max FPS isn quake 3 think I managed to get around 75 at the time iirc but now I think about it i didn't need anymore as the refresh rate on my old school CRT was 75hz ?

Essential applications:

  • Games
That is all.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to spend forever getting anal over your frame rate, recording footage, or any of the other guff.

If you're new to PC gaming, cut all the faff and just enjoy the games for what they are for now. :)

Nothing, as orderoftheflame says just start enjoying the games and don't fret over getting that last Mhz/FPS. :)

I use nothing to enhance my gaming. OC'd my bits and when a new game comes out I crank up the settings to max, try it out for a while and if it gets choppy, just turns things down a little at a time till it looks nice.

It is the hardware that is important. PC, mouse, mousemat, speakers, headset, joysticks etc. They enhance your gaming enjoyment far more than a few extra frames per second.

The only thing i use is msi afterburner, not fussed about fps, but it's handy for monitoring temps and the custom fan setting, due to my gpu's being hot running beasts.
