The girlfriend wants a Navy DS Lite so am looking to get one for her birthday. The only place they seem to be available is Japan/asia and having never imported anything like this from Asia is there anything (apart from import tax) i should be aware of? Has anyone done this before?

Dead pixels may be an issue. Get them on an import machine and you're screwed, buy one from Game and keep returning them till you get a goodun.

Good thing I asked Yesasia to do a pixel check for me first then :D My arrived perfect.

It really does all depend on warranty and the hassle of having to return.
Nintendo do not offer any kind of worldwide warranty on DS machines.
So if it goes wrong you're only option is to return it to the place of purchase and have them return it under warranty.

Sure things don't go as wrong these days, however it's nice knowing if our DS Lite goes wrong we just need to pop into our local Game or at worst speak to Nintendo UK.

The import duty is pretty pricey - I just bought my girlfriend a Navy DS and the shipping (UPS) and duty came in at about £50!

Are the buttons on it Navy as well or are they Grey like the black DS?

i know this thread is old but, if you get a foreign DS Lite or foreign games, are there any compatibility issues or is everything region free? :)
