Q: Will the Wii and PS3 be region-free? Or will the games publisher be able to lock the game down to a specific region?
Alan, Fareham

A: The PS3 will have region free games, allowing European gamers for example to play titles from Japan or the US.
With the above in mind, is anyone thinking of importing one of these bad boys from the States to get it before Christmas? Don't think I can hold out until March 2007 (which will be May/June in reality judging by the Xbox360 launch)

(Before the obligatory thread crapping begins I'd like to say that the Xbox 360 looks great too)

yeah i am trying to convince the missus to let me do it gonna get it shipped to her folks house and get them to fed ex it. just waiting on pre orders online

Its going to cost an absolute fortune to import though. The limited numbers mean people may be paying up to $3000 on ebay.

I was looking into this as I have imported every console I own (except the 360 I got that from work at launch) and TBH I could not find any of my usual suppliers will to ship outside the US most of the big companys don't export anyway and the small stores I normally deal with have been honest and said that they will Ebay the stock to get as much money as possible.

Your only real chance is if you have relitives who are willing to camp outside EB or bestbuy and buy on the night but even then with 400'000 units total for the us I would be amazed if they got one.

Sony will not cover the warrenty in europe so if it goes wrong it will have to be shipped back to the point of purchase and us machines only carry 90 day warrantys.

Then you have to consider import tax for the machine (your folks could mark it at a low value but if it goes missing or gets damaged then that is all you will be covered for) + the cost of a good quality stepdown and there is no guarentee that the games will be region free .

It's a risk and will cost you more to import and tbh you have to look at the launch games and ask yourself is there anything there that You must play right away

The other thing you have to consider is the difference in power supply. The US has a different voltage and a trancformer will be required to play it (these things get hotter than a 360 on Kelly Brooks Chest).

First generation consoles are also natoriously buggy. and could easily malfunction.

Id wait if I were you.

I think Movies are Region coded. But still may be a good option cause they will probably be cheaper to buy from America.

Ahh but u see its only gonna cost about £300 for the console so even if u pay up to £125 on customs charges, u still get it at the same price as u would in the UK but 5 months earlier.

If i get one and it brakes and i will just need to send it back to her mam and get them to send it back

The chances of actually being able to import one at cost price from the US is going to be very slim, 400,000 units at launch those are going to be snapped up in the blink of an eye, the only way you will get one on import is on ebay I would think, the prices they will be going for are going to be insane.

In that sense surely PS3 will do well if they are going to sell like hotcakes ??

Only 400,000 for the whole of the US ? Thats less than 10,000 per STATE and most american states are as big than the UK, thinking about it thats probally less than 1 per store. thats prity laughable really, good luck. Also i would't bother, you'll probally be limited to us online servers, no warrenty, wrong power supply which is internal iirc, games may be region encoded, films definatly will be, PS online will be in dollers also so you'll get charged for the conversion every time.

The 12 or so weeks will fly by before you know it.

my mate in america has preordered 3 PS3's from 3 differant retailers. he thinks he will be lucky if he he gets 1 to be honest. if he gets any of the others they will be going on ebay. cant blame him, some people are going to make silly money off this staggered launch.

He has given me first refusal if he gets more then 1 though  hmmm tempting...........

A lot of people Buy multiples to sell on Ebay just look at the new tickle me elmo it sold out on the first day and now ebay is flooded with them.

Resellers will clean up on this console and 400,000 is a tiny amount
