Saw this link to getting the latest Gears of War 3 Achievement and its seems crazy... who would spend that kind of time trying to get one achievement. It's similar to the Mortal Kombat one where you had to play with every character for over 24 hours, it just seems pointless beyone belief.

Would anyone attempt to do that here for fun? The cynical part of me thinks it's just a ploy to stop people feeling they have "completed" a game and so not trading it in straight away or in this case I guess.. ever. Really though isn't life just too short.

That isn't impossible. Hell it isn't even hard.

It's time consuming, and "takes a long time" does not = difficult.

It's not a clever way to challenge gamers, it's not even a realistic goal for hardcore gamers to strive for, its requirements are so absurdly high that it isn't even rational to aim for it.

I'm sure the designers thought they were being clever when they decided to come up with the "hardest achievement ever" but the way they've done it means they may as well have just said "play the game for 1,000,000 hours" for all the meaning it has. If they wanted the achievement to have meaning they could have made it 100 of each of those, if anything THAT would be hard, by the time you reach 1000 your just running the numbers, it has become a reward for simply playing the game for a long time.

Good luck finishing 50 waves of insane Horde if you think it isn't hard. To do that list of requirements legit is very hard, especially those on insane.

It is though an absurd list that I think was done on purpose. Some of those are possible to do in private boosting. Now rather than have servers full of boosters ruining games this has forced them offline in private for the majority.

They have removed them from our games while letting them waste hours of their own lives chasing 100 GS.

Again, it doesn't MATTER that some individual aspects of the achievement are hard because others will take SO LONG, if it was do something within a certain amount of time of release then yes, it would be damn hard, but because it will require SO MUCH TIME, chances are you will complete the really hard stuff along the way to grinding out the stupidly long kill requirements.

You could argue seriously 3.0 is a real achievement in the sense that its not achievable by the average hardcore gamer, epic clearly put that in more as a nod to the other "seriously" achievements then to actually give players a goal.

Sure there will be some achievement crazies who will earn it but I don't think the design intent was for it to really be achievable (ironic? maybe)

The new unicorn car achievement in Forza 4 is just going to be about pot luck, and then about who has the most money to buy it in the auctions.

I tend to write off certain trophies/achievements and never make any attempt to get them. Even finding 200 pigeons on GTA was too much for me. I think I stumbled across about 5. If you did it without a guide imagine walking the whole GTA4 map looking for the last 3 or 4.

I've always been on the fence about achievements/trophies.

If they are done well, they can add some fun challenges to games but very few games have a good list to be honest.

Mortal Kombat had some interesting ones which were a good challenge. I enjoyed beating Shang Tsung without being hit to unlock Jade etc but then asking me to play 24 hours per character was just insane. Especially saying as though the other stats were all attainable in much less time.

100 wins? 10000 pints of blood? You'll still have 20 hours to go after you max all the rest out. I really hate stuff like that.
Achievements/Trophies are a nice idea, but if they are not done properly they might as well get rid of them completely.

I used to always 100% games back in the 90s well before these came out so it's nice that you get a list of all the games you've done this on.But 9/10 are rubbish so it means little. Missed opportunity to me.

I never chase acheivements, ever...

I enjoy receiving them, but I play a game for it's contents, not a score it rewards for playing the contents :)

This tbh. Though I like getting achievements for random things in games. Best one to date that I can remember is the advertising one in half life which you get for pinning someone to the billboard with the crossbow.

I remember the days of buying games and instantly looking at the achievements I needed to get, hell I'd buy cheap games just to get achievements!
I got bored a long time ago though, I like receiving them but I never look how to get them anymore. I think I got to 30k three years ago and I'm just nearing 40k now.

Wow, I read the article at lunch, what a stupid set of requirements!

I happen to like hunting for hard to get achievements, they do give me a sense of 'achievement' (funny that). I don't go out my way to get them like playing for silly periods of time in one go) but the fun ones to get are always good to aim for.

Yes I think I've got 1000 points in 2011, I'm only playing what I fancy now instead of everything that comes out. So this year it's Gears, Batman and f1 2011. Maybe the Halo update.

Most likely because I don't have the time I used to have before Joe was born :D

Haha, yea, agree.

I have just posted in the Forza 4 thread that FM3 will be my first 100% completiong game, not by chasing achey's, but simply by playing!

Nothing cynical about it. It's totally rational (from Epic's point of view). To everyone else, it' pretty much a total p**s take.
