impossible temps

Hi folks,

since installing watercooling (cpu only to start), im getting temps that seem impossible.

my system consists of:

Phobya dc12 - 220 pump / ek reservoir combo feeding,
zalman wb5+ cpu waterblock to,
swiftech mcr120 radiator,
returning to reservoir via a flow rate wheel

the radiator is cooled with 2 high rpm fans on each side (push / pull)

monitoring the temps, i have noticed the cpu being 1 - 2c less than the system temp, yet from what i have read, the case can be no lower than the ambiant temp and the cpu no lower than the case temp. Not that im complaining, just seems strange and contradictory. could this have something to do with airflow or maybe im getting false readings?
 
It is quite possible that the system/case temp will be higher than ambient (room temp) - ie poor air flow heat from m/b.

From your post it is a little unclear which temps are what, maybe post a screenshot using core temp or similar.

in this picture, the cpu is 1c lower than case, but i have seen it 2c lower..

as I said in my first post:

yet the cpu reports as lower at times. sorry if my last post seemed confusing, it was late (nearly 4am) and i had worked for 13 hours...
 
since i dont know where the ambient case temperature is for your case, what parts are watercooled, or the airflow of your case (and watercooling), heres a couple of ideas:

- the radiators are intakes, meaning they take the cool air, lets say 17C, from outside the case and this gets heated up and chucked inside the case, increasing the internal case temperature
- other components that arent watercooled are adding temperature to the inside of the case close to the case's temperature sensor

whatever it is, i wouldnt complain though because those are some nice temperatures
 
Supposed to be 15c today, but indoors probebly more like 19/20c - so cpu temp is good. still confused about case temp. Also my gfx card seems lower than it was before liquid cooling -possibly as the cpu is no longer adding heat via air cooled heatsink. i have parts in shipping for cooling the card. i also see the ide drive is a fair bit hotter than the sata, so replacing it with another sata may be a cool idea, pardon the pun...
 
Yeah, thanks Reaper. im certainly not complaining. hehe.

This is my first liquid cooled build. Cash being what it is at present, this is a work in progress & liquid cooling is cpu only at present, though parts are on order for the gpu to bring its temp down.

ive also got tidy cables and put a lot of thought into getting optimal airflow around the case. since ive watercooled the cpu, i have noticed a slight drop in temp on my gpu - possibly because of the cpu being no longer air cooled and adding less heat to the system. either way, it seems my direction is good..

i also note that the ide hard drive is 10c more than the sata, so when i can afford, maybe looking at replacing the ide with a sata may be a cool idea, pardon the pun..
 
its probably the GPU's heating up the air in the case then, causing your strange readings. i bet if you put a thermometer near the intakes of the watercooling it would be much lower than the case temp reader.

also, the heat of the HDD's might not be because of what type they are, it could be that the IDE one gets worse airflow, or more use than the SATA one. it might be the drive though

i hope to get the parts i need for cooling the gpu early this week. im keen to see what will happen as im finding this build really interesting compared to previous air cooled builds.

the 2 hdd's are at the bottom front of the case, just behind a led lit 120mm intake fan, but is is possible that i may have placed the ide hdd in the middle of the fan where the dead zone is. i'll check for that tomorrow. im happy you said that now - cheers fella... ;)
