(IMO) People tend to get an uber PC to impress there mates? I don't know if I'm the only one here that thinks this way but I tend to get impressed more by people getting a really low end PC and clocking here and tweaking there and getting to perform almost as well as a machine that costs over twice as much.

I mean spending over £700 on a cpu seems foolish when a CPU that costs less than half 20% of it's price can run better than it when it's overclocked and doing such will impress people more as well as being more rewarding and pocket friendly.

This is pointing out what everyone knows I guess but people will still be stupied and pay insane money for FX and EE chips.

Fair point. I know a few people who tend to buy lower spec components which equal cheaper prices then overclock and the results are equal too if not better than a higher end component.

My whole system didn't cost £700. I don't overclock personally because well I don't know how :(

Same here I saved loads buy not having a cpu in my PC. (sig JK)

Using 3200+

I'm using an X2 3800, cost me £160 a little while ago, had it been any more than that I wouldnt have got it, but at that price it was practically a straight swap for the opteron I had.

The only thing I spend loads of money on is the GFX because that makes most of the difference tbh.

In that regard my PC has been sitting at the same level for some time, in fact I've downgraded from an X800XT which I'd had for over a year to an X800XL.

true ^ if i could go back, i would swap my 4000 for a 3800 single core and get 2 gb of ram instead then clock the cpu a bit

Same here... my dual core pentium D system cost me:

cpu (805) - £85
graphics (x800gto) - £46
ram (2x256mb ddr2 533) - £14
case (super lanboy) - £40
PSU (Seasonic 430w) - £41
DVD rom - £2 :p
CPU cooler (freezer 7 pro) - £13
Graphics cooler (VF700) - £19
Mobo (Asus P5ND2 SLi Deluxe) - £35

Total - £295

Not bad for an almost completely silent, dual core system with a 1ghz OC

This system cost me about £600 although £200 of that was graphics.

My project is currently a £400 (£500 MAX) A64 3200 monster that I'm going to squeeze every last drop I can on air, and hopefully I'll have something that will perform like something that would've cost twice as much, and I'll be very pleased :)

I'm sorry but all this "faster cpu" "more memory" etc is crap.

My PC wasn't great. I bought an X1900XT, it is now incredible. The only criticism I have is loading times which could only be improved by buying a Raptor. I am yet to play a game that troubles my system with all settings maxed out on 1280x1024. The HL2 Lost Coast Stress Test renders smoother than melted butter, and that is something like HDR+16AA+8AF etc

Would you feel more relaxed oc a 3200 or an FX if the worse thing happens and you kill the chip if you kill an 3200 you'll feel like crap but if you had kill an EE FX chip youed feel mmm .......

lol, thanks for making me laugh :D

Wish I had the sense to do this. BLew all my savings on this PC and my 7800GTX just sits here gathering dust being let out for the occasional BF2 game.

I used to be like that but then I couldn't be bothered any more. I no longer play games, so if it makes the internet work *snigger*, and I can use e.g. word/excel play music/porn/movies then i'm a happy bunny.

The most expensive componant in my system is my cooling, coming to over £500. :p

It's pretty easy to get good performance out of a budget CPU, however you can't really skimp on memory and graphics as you'll be paying a premium for quality there.
