Hi, helping my mate with his spec. Budget is £2800. Currently, spec is:

Silverstone TJ07
Asus Xonar D2X
Coolermaster 1000W Silent M Pro
LG 10xBlu-Ray Writer OEM
27" Dell U2711 Monitor
CoolIt ECO ALC
Intel i5 2500K
Asus Maximus IV Extreme B3 rev
2x 2GB XFX 6970 Black
240GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD
2TB Seagate SATA3
8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz

I reckon he needs the Retail version of the blu-ray drive, change the CPU cooler, and the TJ07 is not supposed to be brilliant for air, right?

Anything else need changing?

If you're going to go for the coolIt ECO ALC as well, you might as well go for the corsair H50 instead, type in h50promo on the voucher at check out as well and you get it for £39.99.

Personally I'd got for a H70 or an Antec Kuhler 920 with that sort of budget.

hmm, even with a Z68 board that will leave room for a sound card, there simply isnt enough money for a triple 580 build, but theres plenty for a double 580 one:

can someone do a quick check through this build to see if ive missed anything, because ive changed it about 5 times already
(also, can someone give me advice on the case, motherboard and monitors, i dont know much about them)

YOUR BASKET
1 x OCZ Vertex 3 240GB 2.5" SATA-3 Solid State Hard Drive (VTX3-25SAT3-240G) £424.99

1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM £149.99
1 x Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £144.98
1 x Cooler Master HAF X Gaming Tower Case - Black (RC-942) £129.98

But you didn't
i meant for this build. i didnt suggest it because theresimply wasnt enough money for a triple 580 setup with a decent SSD, case and sound card. with 3k it might have happened, but i figured 2800 was quite enough to spend on a computer and the OP would not be amused if i asked for more money

as for the other build, i dont think there were any Z68 boards on overclockers when that was specced

I meant you didn't when you made this post:

surely at that budget you could get twin 580's, maybe even three of them?
(along with all the other stuff you have)

This suggests to the OP that they could possibly get 3 580's to go with the original motherboard and soundcard they chose. That wouldn't work.

ah, that was because i hadnt looked into it very much when i suggested that. i had literally just scanned through the list and gone "case, yep; PSU, looks decent to me; motherboard, expensive; graphics, seems low for £2800; monitor, expensive, but very good; etc, etc"

theres no way i would recommend 3x 580's on that board after joojar's build

hmm... I told him to go for 6970 CF because of this http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1573598
where the 6970 CF seems comparable to the 580 SLI... but you guys reckon 580s are the way to go?

I also told him there was little point in the 2600k over the 2500k because he's not planning on doing any video encoding, but if there's room in the budget, i'm sure he'll spring for it.

Worth getting a z68 board then? if it would allow tri-sli later, seems like a sensible thing to do. And.... what is the best current air cooler? As I said in the op, I told him the Eco ALC wasn't the best choice.

they are pretty comparable (more so than i expected) going by OcUK's favourite benchmark site:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/308?vs=298

as for tri fire vs tri SLI, that chart is vera confusing

the thing that will swing it for the 580's in my build is the 3D surround. ATI is apparently pretty poo for 3D, and i dont know if it can do 3D over 3 monitors atall
