I'm aiming to build a £1000 gaming system for my wife and have come up with the following spec:

Does anyone have any suggested improvements to the above?

* No need for a mouse, keyboard, windows.

Quick reply:

That particular memory is overkill - will be lucky to hit 3200MHz. Could save £40 for better memory @ 3200Mhz
PSU Antec HCG on special - quality/value with 10 year guarantee
That cooler is not AM4 compatible and probably no better than ref cooler - and better ones for approx money.

You could rejig the build and get a better GPU

Will post back when not on pad...

EDIT: Have you got more HDD drives to add as 256Gb is tiny?

Quick example around the X2700 bundle - with superior GPU, better/suitable memory, and 1440p monitor and better value PSU. This could still be improved upon - but in the middle of stripping a friends pc...

I would consider rejigging build altogether to keep within £1000 budget - perhaps 2600X/Tomahawk B450 and bigger SSD - if your storage is limited.

An example 1600X build with quality B450 with decent VRM cooling (for possible zen 2 upgrade) - larger SSD, still 1440p monitor (so could be swapped out) perfect for gaming and nearer your budget (case can be swapped if wanted):

Money could be saved by using stock cooler, dropping to 1080p monitor and lower quality case but you would need to add an intake to that Bitfenix case ideally...

just a tweak to the above builds.
matx form factor and using a 2600x instead.
also a faster and larger ssd (512gb vs 480 gb) for a fiver more - worth it in the longer run as one can never have too much storage.
i wouldn't get the kingston ram as it's very loose timings (3200 c18) - just save the fiver and get the 3000 c16 ram instead

£1046 as specced if bought solely from ocuk - but you can get the 2600x elsewhere for £20 cheaper (inc free shipping) and the monitor elsewhere for ~£15-20 cheaper (again inc free shipping) - bringing the total build cost to ~£1000.

I'd wait until the end of the month when CEX is on to see what AMD show about the 3000 series Ryzen and X570 boards. and if you can't wait then I'd go with the above build, with the expectation that the CPU will be worth about £80 in 4-6 weeks. :)

As above - it's usually our default mantra at the start of a new build request - missed it as I was covered in 3 years of my mates house dust that had taken residence in the computer I was troueshooting.

Echo above, if you can, wait for zen 2 - it makes all round fiscal and performance sense.

(and @tamzzy refinements to ssd and memory are spot on - as for form factor, it's whatever suits your needs.)
