Improving Air Flow

Hello! I just got my Asus DirectCUII 6950 and had to clean up my case a little, as well as having to cut a chunk out of my FDD+HDD bays to fit the monster ;P

I'm planning on getting a new air cooler for my CPU to replace my old freezer 7, i was looking at the Akasa Venom to be exact so along with that i want to get some new fans to improve air flow but i dont know what the best config for it would be.

This is my current set up

There is a 120mm fan at the bottom to the right of the HDDS but you cant see it in the photo!

when i get my new cooler would it be advisable to get a second fan for it, as it can take 2?

thanks

According to this u won't see much of a gain with using a push/pull config on that cooler, that said u will be able to run the fans a bit slower and achieve the same temps.

Get a fan on the rear or the top of the case as an exhaust.

On a side note, isn't a 6950 huge overkill on a E8400?

What idle/load temperatures does that card get to with 2 fans and a monstrous cooler?

I remember the days when people went batty over 2 slot graphic cards. Crazy how that makes a 2 slot card look puny. :)

+1 also make sure your heatsink fan is blowing out of the case, right now you are pretty much recycling the hot air from your CPU. with your current setup even if you turn the freezer 7 around you should see a little change in temp while idle and a few degrees on load as most of the hot air would be going out of the case

At around 30-40% fans on idle it sits happily at 40-45C but my room is around and under load it hits around 55 with fans at 50%, the fans are really quiet on it, the cpu fan is much louder its only around the 85% that it gets noticeable. Those temps are with two screens up at 1680X1050 so the card is in essence using twice as much ram on idle. Ive tried it with one screen on the card idles around 32C.

i thought as much when i bought it but the E8400 seems to be keeping up quite nicely in most games its solid at 60 with vsync on, im upgrading to an 2500k in a few months anyway.

ive ordered the cooler and 4 120mm fans, 1 for the front, 1 for the rear exhaust,
should i put 1/2 fans onto my sidepanel as intakes ?

Rear and Front should be sufficient. A sidepanel fan will probably just mess up any airflow you have from front to back. Only use a side fan if you really need to cool down the graphics card as it'll get it's air normally from the front fan no problem.

A HD6950 is hotter with dual screens because it runs a higher clockspeed than single screen idle and is not so much to do with the VRAM usage. The card also consumes around 30W more electrical energy from the wall in multi screen mode.
