Improving credit rating from scratch

I'm quite qurprised no one has mentioned already: PayPal. I have set this up to my bank account and it comes out as a Direct Debit a couple of days later after I pay for something. There's loads of online companies that allow you to use PayPal, and I'm fairly confident this has helped me loads in the last 6 - 12 months.
