Improving file transfer speed?

My main rig and fileserver are linked thru a 100Mbps link. I normally use windows filesharing to browse and transfer files, but recently it has been getting slow.

It took almost an hour to copy 7 gigs over, and when I looked in task manager, it was only using around 15% network bandwidth.

Is there any way of improving speeds at all? Maybe use FTP software instead?

ftp would most likely be faster, my synology nas works faster using ftp than direct windows folder transfer.

you could play with mtu settings and not sure if its possible on 100mbps networks but look into jumbo frames

Ok, I'll give FTP a bash.

I'm not really sure what jumbo frames are, but I'll have a look into it. I'm going thru a router also - I guess this might slow things down a little?

Also, my fileserver is running a firewall and AV - I guess this could also lead to a slow down?

probably your write speed on the server letting it down.

Well, I'm copying froms over FROM the FTP right now... My fileserver is also using RAID5, so I'm used to the write speed being slow.

I've remote desktop'ed into my fileserver, and my CPU is maxxed. 50% or so is filezilla FTP server (tranferring files two by two), 25% is being used by "cpf.exe" (comodo firewall), and 10% is by utorrent, and the rest is by other things.

I'm guessing the CPU is causing a bottleneck here, as I have seen much faster file transferrs in the past.... I'll try it again later with nothing running apart from the FTP app and see what speeds I get.
