Improving Internal Wiring?

Hi all,

My local exchange has just been put on the BT Infinity website under the 31st December 2012 title. First of all, does anyone know if this means it will be done by 31st December? or on the 31st?

I'm currently getting 3.5mb d/l speed which has slowly dropped from the 5mb I was getting 2-3 years ago. My internal wiring is very old, the master socket is a normal socket with one of these behind it:

The master socket is currently in the back bedroom, I would like to get it moved to the front bedroom but I doubt I would be able to do it. Would it cost a lot to get a BT engineer out to do it?

My router stats:

Do you think I could get another 1-2mb if the internal wiring was improved?

Cheers

Depends what you get when you plug the modem into the test socket/master socket compared to what you get where it's plugged currently.

Would it cost a lot to get a BT engineer out to do it? Standard call out charge is something like £165. Check BT website

I haven't got a test socket lol, that's how old it is :p It's plugged into the master socket now.

@Mike306 I thought it would be something like that. Would that be £165 to fix it or £165 just for them to knock my front door lol. I haven't phoned them yet as I don't think it's worth paying just for an extra 1-2mb.

I had a problem similar to you a long time ago (5+ years) to which I finally agreed for an engineer to come round (risking the huge charge if it turned out to be nothing or internal wiring). Whilst he was here he changed the master socket to an NTE5 box and fitted a filtered faceplate. At the time, he told me I could have requested that the master socket was changed to an NTE5 regardless of any faults.

How true that is today I have no idea.

Have you ensured the ringwire has been removed? This link helps identify it, I know it uses an NTE5 but the wire colour is still the same!

I once asked a BT Openreach engineer about moving the master socket to a different location. He told me BT would charge for the job, however hypothetically if a good electrician who knows what he was doing did it, then so be it. One electrician visit later and one nicely relocated master socket for the price of a couple of drinks. BT have been multiple times since and not said / spotted anything wrong - all good!

Edit: Your master socket picture didn't load - I'm not sure whether it is the same any more (sorry). Someone should be able to clarify.

The master socket in our house was moved by someone other than a BT engineer and it caused no problem they didn't even bat an eyelid a year later when they swapped the master socket!

I just checked the BT website and they charge £130 for the call out charge which includes any equipment they need to swap. I was expecting to pay £300+ so this seems quite cheap :p

Thanks for all your help/advice.
