Hello!

I'd like to improve the sound from my TV and also for when watching Blu-ray films. What are people's thoughts on something like:-

Q ACOUSTICS 1050i Floor Speakers.

and the YAMAHA RX-V565 Receiver.

I've read some reviews online for the Speakers which are positive, especially for the price of them. Cheapest I've found is £289.95. The Receiver is just one I've picked, my mate has a Yamaha Receiver and likes it and this one seems to offer all the good sound features, DolbyTrueHD and Burr Brown DAC's. So should be good for my Blu-rays. It does 24Hz Refresh Rate and also has lip sync correction. Again, priced at £369.95, which I don't think is too expensive.

Is there anything wrong with these components? Can anyone recommend perhaps a better Receiver or combo? Don't want to make a costly mistake. Also, is the Receiver powerful enough for these Speakers?

Thanks!

One thing I didn't ask in my original post, what do people think is better in terms of sound quality and overall enjoyment. A decent set of floor standing speakers as shown above, or, something like this:-

Pioneer S-V610 II 5.1 Kit
(https://www.forumhifivisual.co.uk/S...V610_II_5_1_SURROUND_SPEAKER_SYSTEM_2230.html)

Kind of 2 ways to go about it all really. The only problem I have with this idea is that I already have a sub, so I don't have room for 2. I think though I can utilise my existing sub though so it wouldn't be a problem. Shame though to get a kit and not use part of it...

So yeah, just thinking of some routes.

:)

That pioneer kit will sound pretty crap, and tbh will probably feel very plasticky !!!!!

Pop over to avfourms and have a good read of the 'Receiver' section to get a better idea of what the hot models seem to be. I think yamaha equipment is great tbh and the best of the jap bunch.

2 questions: What sub do you have, and what is your total absolute maximum can't go 1p over budget ?

Yeah I think some decent floor standing speakers will be nicer, like you say, that kit and like most you see on the high street are very plastic.

I'll have a look over on AVForum, cheers.

The sub at the moment is a Mordaunt-Short Avant 309i. And my budget, most likely £700 max. (I'm thinking £300 - £400 for the Receiver and about £300 for speakers). :)

Hmmm after reading about the Yamaha receiver it would appear they've done some "cost cutting" on it. From looking around for other Receivers the Sony STR-DA 2400ES appears to be recommended, slightly more cash however.

Ive got the Yamaha RX-V465 (5.1 instead of 7.1) and yes they have done some cost cutting on areas like the speaker terminals but its still a decent amp and well worth a listen.
