Improving wireless to desktop

I recently got a desktop PC , and bought a wireless USB adapter - tiny Asus one and the signal seems OK but the speeds I'm getting are terrible.

I can't even max out my internet connection :p (20mb/20mb up/down)

The router I'm using is a TP-Link WR841ND , this is being changed shortly to a Draytek Vigor 2130N - Not so much choice on routers unfortunately as it needs to support VLAN tagging in order for IPTV to work.

Ethernet isn't possible as it'd require drilling holes, and the office only has 1 plug point, so does the area where the router is - and both have a lot of things running off them already so homeplugs probably won't be any good either.

I'm thinking of getting the TP Link WN951N PCI Card (3 antennas), replacing 1 of the antennas with an 8dBi omni-directional antenna (TP Link ANT2408C) and also change one of the router antennas to that one.

Is the likely to give me a better signal/connection? Currently copying files to my NAS gives me around 600kb/s :p during this time my ping to the router will increase to 200ms or so!! and makes streaming any videos etc. impossible! The laptop in the same room is fine however, no issues there

Devolo homeplugs (and probably others) have a version with Mains pass-through. You plug it into the socket and then plug your extension or whatever into the homeplug. I've got two and they work very well even with loads of things plugged into the extension. Worth a try?

Sounds like a good idea, that way you'll get the stability and speed of LAN (depending on which homeplugs you buy) without sacrificing a plug.
