In debt, but by how much?

I've never been in debt to anyone

Same here. I have no credit or store cards and I've never needed a loan.

Actually come to think about it people owe me about £1000  :p

between me and the wife, about £30k.
2 months ago we cleared £40k.

if im honest, i have no idea how on earth we got into £70k of debt

Got about £6k on my student loan still to pay off. Could pay it off in a lump from savings, but it's not worth it as interest from the savings is more than the interest on the loan. I see it as a small pay rise when I finally finish paying it off. Other than that, I have no debts though I'd happily take on a mortgage if I could find anywhere at a reasonable price around here... :/

If I could do without credit cards I would. I got one so I could buy stuff online, and to improve my credit rating (which appears to have worked given that they keep upping the limit and offering me loans).

Personal debt - zero, excepting current credit card balances, which I pay off in full automatically, because credit card interest rates are a mugs game.

Business debt - that's a bit more complicated and I'm not even going to try going into figures. All it's worth saying is that I take finance when it's in my interest (excuse pun) to do so, not because I need to do so. I won't over-extend, because I don't need to.

****loads

about 30k at last count but I've had my "lightbulb" moment to quote moneysavingexpert speak..

loans, credit cards etc.. I have a sizeable mortgage but thankfully a fairly sizeable wage to match so as long as I tread carefully I should be fine.

All you folks saying "nothing!" and "never been in debt" if you're family running homeowners then well done, keep it that way.. if you're kids then make sure you never get into debt.. its bloody rubbish.

Amazed how much some people are in debt :( As interest rates continue going up this country could be in trouble :(

~£4,000: my tuition fees for this year and accommodation for this term. Will be £6,000 by next July and £18,000 by 2009, but student loans aren't the most difficult debts to pay off so I should be relatively okay.

I'm going to hazard a guess. Did you borrow some money to buy some things which you couldn't afford and didn't need? ;)

So far: £9k of student loan to cover 2 years of my course so far, then add £1k for my student overdraft. By the time I finish university it will be at around £15k I think. At 2.35% PA I'll be paying £350 a year of interest.

Found out the other day that they actually start charging you interest in your first year of university rather than when you graduate.

Won't be long till my debt reaches the national average :D

2.5k left on a 9k loan (never ever listen to a financial advisor again... :( ) to be paid off in less than 12 months. hoping to pay off early if i sell my bike.

then about 3-4k on credit cards. unfortunately comes with the territory when racing motorbikes. £600 every day you swing your leg over the damned thing means it goes up substantially in a couple of weekends.

typical student loan and about £1000 on a credit card so not a great deal really. actually in perspective really nothing as I pay off the balance in full each month.

currently clocked up a 4k student loan. I reckon it'll be about 10k once I finnish.

Is it 9% of your salary a year you pay back when you're earning over the threshhold amount?

About £6000 that I owed on credit card/overdraft now on a loan due to going mental buying PC stuff over the years and needing new central heating. I realised just how much I owed last year so got a loan to just have one main debt to pay each month.

I'm now looking to work to pay for my Vista upgrade rather than what I used to do of buying bits for home so that I could support work users. If they cry they can do one when users complain of not getting Vista support. :)

No ongoing debts - just monthly spending on credit card - and no mortgage (paid off 4 years ago). About £35k in savings. Aiming for £100k savings by 55, and early retirement. I plan to live off my savings between 55 and 65, then draw my pension - should be about £15k p.a. (index-linked).

45k in loans and cc's about 3 years ago on top of that, 30k for the mortgage on the flat (bought it when house prices were normal)

Left me with about £180 a month to spend on food etc but i managed, then I moved in with the Mrs and sold the flat for 86k which cleared the lot, with a little left over so i was lucky in that I didn't have to buy another property to move into.
