What happens in a race when a competitor runs out of tyres?

Maybe they have too many spins or punctures in practice. Maybe the tyre degradation is too high. Maybe the whole weekend required full wets and their allocation isn't sufficient thanks to punctures / whatever. Whatever the reason, in the race the competitor needs a new set of tyres to safely continue and none are immediately available. What happens?

Nothing they can do. Can't have more tyres. Other teams world demand them too. Could Pirelli even supply that number without the 3 months notice? Car should be retire dfrom the event.

Wets... they tend to last pretty well. But they do minimal running on the inters and wets anyway incase they need to use them during the race.

There have been situations when Pirelli have supplied an emergency number of tyres I'm sure, although I can't really remember when. There apuld need to be a very unusual set of circumstances for a team to run completely out of tyres, they have ten sets for the weekend I believe.

An unlucky team could easily go through six sets - or more - just in the practise sessions thanks to punctures. Drive over debris from a crash and hey presto you have a puncture.

If the track stays wet the Wets and intermediates hardly wear at all. it's when it's not wet enough for full wets that they start to wear and overheat. Then the intermediates are best but if a dry line starts to appear then it's close to the time for slicks so again they rarely wear out.

But if all three practice sessions were wet?

They just do sod all laps in practice and Friday spectators go home wet and even more bored than normal

So I was reading the regs this morning, as something that hadn't been mentioned so far was that a certain number of dry tyre sets are reserved for Q3 and the race and cannot be used outside of those sessions.

Whilst reading I noticed however that sporting reg 24.4(f) actually permits the allocation of additional Intermediate tyres in certain circumstances regarding wet classified practice sessions.

If either P1 or P2 are declared wet one additional set of intermediate tyres will be made available to any driver who used a set of intermediate tyres during either session. Under such circumstances, one used set of intermediate tyres must be electronically returned before the start of the qualifying practice session.

If neither P1 nor P2 are declared wet, but the likelihood of P3 being declared wet is deemed by the FIA to be high, one additional set of intermediate tyres will be made available to all drivers. Under such circumstances, one set of intermediate tyres must be electronically returned before the start of the qualifying practice session.

Their tyre allocation is only for the quali and race. I don't think it's possible to kill all your tyres given the amount of run time were talking about. If the do go on a spree of flat spotting tyres during the Race then they will use some of those which are "scrubbed". I don't think it's ever happened that a team has ever "run out" completely.

They get:
“unless otherwise determined by the FIA and with the agreement of [Pirelli]” – set to receive: two sets of hard tyres, three sets of mediums and eight sets of softs per race weekend.
Given that they have a bunch of tyres in the back of the garage for practice, I assume if they destroy too many that the FIA will allow them to use more.

Worst case scenario is that they have to use a set of tyres which have done a few laps in qualifying in the race. Even then they are allowed to "remold" used tyres over night, so that further softens the blow, especially for the harder compounds.
