I'm upgrading my PC and it needs to be done this week. The plan was all coming together then Intel went and screwed it up by delaying the release of the Conroe E6600 I (and many others) was getting.

I have the case and graphics card here and am considering ordering a P4 S775 chip to do me for a while until conroe prices settle and they actually become available or just going AMD.

I currently have a P4 S478 2.8GHz HT CPU, how much of a difference would I see if I got a cheap P4 S775 805 or 820 Dual Core ?

unless you absolutely NEED a half decent CPU for gaming etc... for your rig to tide you over for the next week until Conroe is released, just get a £30 Celeron D and just be happy in the knowledge you've got a) your pc up and running b) you've got a cheap back up CPU and c) your Conroe should be here soon ;)

Yep the Celerons dropped in price too so they are little money to just tide you over, most of which you can get back in the members market or ebay. :)

For those who want some performance the Celeron 356 is nippy as it has 512kb cache. :)
 
celerons are the pentiums highly under-rated budget brother :p they clock like mad, there good for everyday use and gaming and there cheap as hell
 
Thanks for the advice.

I was thinking of a £100 limit on this as I wouldn't (hopefully) have it for very long and the likes of the P4 541/3.2 GHz would be more than enough to tide me over (and a step up speed wise from what I have) and come in under budget at about £75 inc delivery.


I could even use it to flash the BIOS of the P5WDH if it's still on 401 when it arrives :).

I'm still waiting for accurate supply dates from the etailer I ordered from, but after Intel's great launch and accurate info until today (lol) I want to have something that would kep me happy for a month or so to be on the safe side.
 
I have all the bits for my new conroe system, bar one, no prizes for guessing which bit's missing! I also have a cheapo celeron which I bought in order to get my P5W DH Deluxe to post and then update the bios.

My question is: if I use the Celeron to get the system completely up and running, programs installed etc, when the conroe finally arrives, will I just be able to drop it in place of the celeron? Won't I end up having to reformat and reinstall windows etc?

You'd only need to swap the CPU's, there'd be no need to reformat.
 
No not generally for a CPU. Normally WinXP only throws a wobbly if you drastically change motherboard chipset.
